baby-powder-hand2For a century, Americans have been using baby powder on their skin.  But some researchers say baby powder may put some women at risk of ovarian cancer, which kills about 14,500 American women every year.

Talc is a naturally occurring clay mineral composed of magnesium and silicon. Known for its softness, it is used in cosmetic products like blush because it absorbs moisture and prevents caking.

Many women use baby powder on their inner thighs to prevent chafing, while others sprinkle it on their perineum, sanitary pads or underwear to stay “fresh” and dry.

This revelation of the connection between baby powder and ovarian cancer comes as two separate juries handed down multimillion dollar judgments against Johnson & Johnson, sending a strong message that talcum powder use led to the death of two women from ovarian cancer.

Cancer Researcher Says Use Baby Powder Alternatives

And a lead cancer research from University Hospitals agrees with the juries’ verdicts. Dr.  Richard Lee, a prominent Cancer Research and Oncologist, says more scientific research needs to be done, urging women to use alternative non-talc based baby powder products.

“I would be cautious about the use of Talcum Powder products — especially around the genital areas, as it’s been associated with ovarian cancer,” Dr. Lee stated.

Dr. Lee further cautions against using baby powder on children and babies.  In fact, he recommends to avoid any potential talcum powder cancer risks to switch to a cornstarch based baby powder rather than a talc-based powder.  Many products indicate if the product contains talc on the label or ingredients list.

However, J&J officials support their talcum powder products and iterate that there is no safety risk in using their baby powder products.

“The safety of talc is based on more than 30 years of data generated by authoritative researchers,” Dr. Joanne Waldstreicher, J&J’s Chief Medical Officer said. “This research has been reviewed by global regulatory bodies, and none has required a change in labeling to reflect any safety risk from talc powder products.”

Dr. Lee is not alone in his concern about risks of using baby powder.  There have been warnings issued by individual doctors for years regarding the dangers of talcum powder and the potential for women who use it over long periods of time to develop ovarian cancer.

The belief regarding the connection between baby powder and ovarian cancer is that, over time, particles of talcum powder can enter a woman’s body through the vagina and settle in her ovaries.  This belief stems from analyses that have been done on cancerous tissues.  These cancerous cells contained particles of talc according to the doctors who studied them.
