Global Tel Link (GTL) agreed to a class action lawsuit settlement to resolve claims it charged incarcerated individuals and their families excessive fees for communications services.

The Global Tel Link class action settlement benefits those who were incarcerated in a West Virginia jail or prison between May 15, 2022, and April 30, 2023, and were charged excess amounts by ViaPath for video calls and other messaging services or who contacted an individual incarcerated in a West Virginia jail or prison between May 15, 2022, and April 30, 2023, and were charged excess amounts for video calls and/or other messaging services.

According to the GTL class action lawsuit, Global Tel Link charged incarcerated individuals and their families excessive fees for video calls, messaging and other communication services. These fees allegedly violated the Federal Telecommunications Act and West Virginia consumer laws.

Global Tel Link, doing business as ViaPath Technologies, is a telecommunications company that provides communication services for incarcerated individuals.

GTL has not admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to pay an undisclosed sum to resolve the class action lawsuit.

Under the terms of the Global Tel Link class action settlement, class members can receive a full refund for the amounts they overpaid for video calls, messaging and tablet usage. Class members who were overcharged will receive an additional refund equal to the amount they were overcharged.

For example, if a class member was overcharged $10, they would receive a $10 refund plus an additional $10 for a total payment of $20.

The deadline for exclusion and objection is June 30, 2025.

The final approval hearing for the GTL class action settlement is scheduled for July 18, 2025.

No claim form is required to benefit from the settlement. Class members who do not exclude themselves will automatically receive settlement benefits.

I need to find out how to claim

  2. Jazzmin Smith says:

I closed my account due to all the fraudulent charges and the excessive onetime fee of $50 to start the account that was not added as funds but a one time payment to start up smh and was told any money I had would be refunded via check and months later I’ve still have yet to see this said check they owe me well over 1k with all the tax fees and unused money smh never again this is one of the worst companies to do business with just raping people out of money that we struggle daily to make.

  3. Candice Parker says:

Gtl charges me sometimes and sometimes they don’t i don’t get it. Been charged and not received funds etc. I am in Oregon. It’s hard enough to maintain a healthy relationship with our loved ones without being ripped off

  4. Kristin Morton says:

Wish you guys would look into VA and especially Blue Ridge Regional Jails located in Va they’re charging astronomical rates for phone calls and commissary they also stopped allowing inmates to have books and magazines sent to the jail and they only allow you to see your legal mail and mail on the tablet but they charge for using the tablet and they’re aren’t enough to go around so the gangs control them, it’s insane. It’s a for profit seeking jail that’s privately owned. They’ve had several higher up employees get fired for sexual misconduct and harassment but their self investigated PREA reports which are online say that out of all the sexual misconduct there’s hardly ever any claims founded if any. They feed the inmates labeled boxes titled “not for human consumption”, and the kitchen inmates will back this up. They have black mold and sewage leaking all around the jail and don’t give any cleaning supplies other than pads and some watered down spray. It’s disgusting

  5. Ang says:

    Please add me to this

  6. Lisa Misener says:

This has also happened in Leflore county jail in Poteau, Ok I believe I put $10 on my sons account and we got only 2 text messages and the $10 was gonna. It’s sad because they are taking advantage of the families if the families don’t have much money the inmate and families can’t stay in contact and that’s hard for the children of the family. They even charge for video visits and that is the only way to visit. That’s not right

  7. Chasity Stevenson says:

I have been using GTL since 2019 and currently still use for my son that has been incarcerated for quite sometime. Please contact me so that I may be added to this lawsuit. I never received a notice.

  8. Joann Davis says:

Please add me to this I’ve been using GTL for many years over 10 plus years

  9. Luz Munoz says:

I live here in TX. Every transactions for calls, messages, video calls there were fees of 5-7$. I want to say about 2 weeks ago i got 170$ in credit. I didn’t know about the lawsuit they had against them but I’m glad. They were taking advantage and over charging it was absurd! Now there’s no charge as it should been in the beginning. To be specific I’m talking about Johnson County Jail in Cleburne,TX
