Mercer University agreed to a class action lawsuit settlement to resolve claims that it failed to prevent a 2023 data breach that compromised student and employee information.
The Mercer University settlement benefits individuals who were notified by Mercer University that their information may have been compromised in a data breach between Feb. 12 and 24, 2023.
The class action lawsuit claimed Mercer University failed to prevent a data breach that occurred due to its inadequate cybersecurity measures. The Mercer University data breach allegedly compromised sensitive information, including Social Security numbers, that could be used for fraud or identity theft.
Mercer University is a private university in Georgia with campuses in Macon, Atlanta and Savannah.
Mercer hasn’t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to pay an undisclosed sum to resolve the data breach class action lawsuit.
Under the terms of the Mercer University settlement, class members can receive up to $450 for ordinary losses such as communication expenses, credit costs, professional fees, fraudulent charges and up to five hours of lost time at a rate of $20 per hour.
Class members who experienced extraordinary losses as a result of identity theft or fraud linked to the data breach can receive up to $5,500 in reimbursement for these damages.
In addition to expense reimbursement, all class members are eligible for two years of free credit monitoring and identity resolution services.
The deadline for exclusion and objection is Feb. 17, 2025.
The final approval hearing for the Mercer data settlement is scheduled for April 17, 2025.
To receive settlement benefits, class members must submit a valid claim form by March 18, 2025.
