You could receive a BetterHelp refund through a Federal Trade Commission (FTC) settlement if you paid for services through one of the company’s websites.

The settlement benefits consumers who signed up and paid for services through a BetterHelp website between Aug. 1, 2017, and Dec. 31, 2020. BetterHelp websites include BetterHelp, MyTherapist, Teen Counseling, Faithful Counseling, Pride Counseling, iCounseling, Regain and Terappeuta.

According to the FTC, BetterHelp promised to keep consumer information private yet shared user information with Facebook, Snapchat, Pinterest and Criteo. BetterHelp allegedly shared email addresses, IP addresses and answers to health questions with these companies for advertising purposes.

BetterHelp is an online therapy service.

BetterHelp has not admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to pay $7.8 million to resolve the FTC lawsuit.

Under the terms of the FTC settlement, consumers can receive a BetterHelp refund based on the amount they paid for BetterHelp services. Consumers can choose to receive their payments as PayPal payments, Zelle payments or mailed checks.

There is no exclusion or objection deadline for the FTC settlement.

The settlement was finalized in a final decision order on July 14, 2023.

No action is required to receive a BetterHelp refund, but consumers can select their payment method until June 10, 2024. Consumers who do not take action will automatically receive their refund payment to the email address where they received the FTC settlement notice.
