Allianz Global Assistance (AGA) agreed to a $19.75 million class action lawsuit settlement to resolve claims that it charged an illegal assistance fee on travel and event protection plans offered through airline carriers and event ticket sellers.
The AGA class action settlement benefits California and Washington purchasers of certain travel and event ticket insurance plans Allianz offers.
The California class includes California residents who purchased one or more qualifying travel and/or event protection plans between Sept. 4, 2016, and Sept. 30, 2023, for a trip or event within California.
The Washington class includes Washington residents who purchased one or more qualifying travel and/or event protection plans between April 2, 2018, and Sept. 30, 2023, for a trip or event within Washington.
According to the class action lawsuit, Allianz charged an illegal fee for “non-insurance assistance services” that was deceptively hidden from consumers at checkout. Plaintiffs claim these fees violated both California and Washington consumer protection laws.
Allianz Global Assistance offers travel insurance policies and other travel-related services.
AGA hasn’t admitted wrongdoing but agreed to pay an undisclosed sum as part of a settlement to resolve the class action lawsuit.
Under the settlement terms, class members can receive up to 75% of the assistance fees they paid as part of their Allianz travel or event protection plan(s). Compensation amounts will vary depending on when the plans were purchased.
Plans purchased by California class members between Sept. 4, 2016, and July 31, 2019, or by Washington class members between April 2, 2018, and April 7, 2020, will result in 75% refunds.
Plans purchased by California class members between Aug. 1, 2019, and Sept. 30, 2023, or by Washington class members between April 8 and Sept. 30, 2020, will result in 40% refunds.
Claimants who purchased multiple plans in different periods may receive differing compensation rates for each plan.
Class members could receive up to double their projected refund amounts depending on the number of claims filed.
For example, instead of receiving 75% refunds, class members could receive 150% refunds. Similarly, 40% refunds could be doubled to 80% refunds. However, this is not guaranteed, and if a large number of claims are filed, refunds could be reduced below the expected refund amount.
The deadline for exclusion and objection is Jan. 25, 2024.
The final approval hearing for the AGA class action lawsuit settlement is scheduled for Feb. 22, 2024.
In order to receive settlement benefits, class members must submit a valid claim form by Jan. 25, 2024.

We bought travel protection for cruise 2022 and the flight with Southwest Airlines was canceled 12/26/22. They never reimbursed us and fought 1yr with Virgin Cruise which finally got cruise rebooked but no money back from insurance we paid.
Why is this restricted to California and Washington. Be great to kjnow that as part of the article.
Add me please
Add me as I purchased many
I tried to fill out the claim form it would not open and I need a claim ID to do this claim. Global has scammed and refused to pay out on several trips I bought insurance for one I couldn’t use due to being hospitalalized
I had purchased a year plan with Allianz and tried to file a medical claim and sent the same documents over and over for 6 months, they kept telling me they didnt get it, I finally registered a letter and sent the 14 pages of medical i had done on a cruise ship, to be told by allianz, i had to file with my personal medical insurance first, I said why i bought a plan with you, Anyway filed with BCBS and was told they dont cover medical on ship, I sent the evidence to allianz who then told me my case is closed and need to start over. I still havent gotten back anything, can you open this for other states
When I tried to log for the class action settlement with Allianz, it has warned me not use because the site information isn’t safe. How do I join in this class action settlement? Can you mail me a form?
What about purchase from Indiana for travel to other states?
How about Allaniz coverage through AAA in other states I sent in tons of receipts and invoices they take forever to communicate and then you can’t understand them on the phone with the broken English they speak !! I filed a claim this year and they only allowed part of it when it was all together and the shop my vehicle went to at first was back logged by 3 weeks and then couldn’t repair it so I had it towed across the state to a different shop that could. And my claim was purchased AAA in Oregon that has Allianz dollars travel interruption coverage they ripped me off !!
Generali Global has denied all claims involving travel into Panama/Chiriqui that for over the past month has been subject to terrorism involving nothing less than a siege of the travel areas, including blockage of all major roads resulting in no food, gasoline, LP gas (cooking fuel for residents) and even medicines. My contract should cover under Section 14 – Terrorism. I suspect they denied many hundreds of claims for people that, for their own safety, had to cancel their trips and were then denied reimbursement in good faith under the policy agreement. Do you know who would take this case? Thank you!
