Google has agreed to pay $7.25 million to resolve claims that their Pixel phones are defective and lead to microphone and speaker failure.

The Google Pixel class action settlement benefits consumers who purchased a Google Pixel or Pixel XL that was manufactured before Jan. 4, 2017 and did not receive a replacement that was manufactured after Jan. 3, 2017 or refurbished after June 5, 2017.

Plaintiffs Patricia Weeks and Waleed Anbar filed their Google Pixel class action lawsuit in February 2018, alleging that these phones possess a microphone defect if they were manufactured before early 2017.

The defect reportedly results in microphone and speaker failure, making it difficult or impossible to make calls, issue voice commands via Google Assistant, or use other features.

Google allegedly failed to inform consumers of the microphone issues and did not acknowledge the defect despite reportedly receiving hundreds of complaints. The company also failed to provide any sort of relief to consumers, according to the plaintiffs.

“Instead of fixing the defective Pixel phones, providing refunds, or replacing the devices with non-defective phones, Google has replaced defective phones with other defective phones, resulting in many consumers repeatedly experiencing the microphone defect,” the Google Pixel class action lawsuit claimed.

Google has not admitted any wrongdoing by agreeing to settle the Pixel class action lawsuit against them. Instead, the Google Pixel class action settlement allows all parties to resolve the issue without the costs and risks of continued litigation.

Consumers who did not experience the defect or who cannot prove their experience will receive up to $20. Consumers who paid an insurance deductible to replace their Pixel will receive reimbursement for their deductible payment. People who experienced the defect in more than one Pixel will receive $500. Consumers who experienced the defect in only one Pixel will receive up to $350 or a pro rata portion of the remaining settlement fund if there is not enough to pay each claimant $350.

Claim Forms need to be submitted by Oct. 7, 2019 in order for claimants to receive compensation. Consumers can support their claim of experiencing the defect with documentation that proves they experienced the problem and/or made an effort to fix it.

The deadline for exclusion and objection is Oct. 7, 2019. The final approval hearing for the Google Pixel class action settlement is Dec. 6, 2019.
