Wilson Sporting Goods Co. has agreed to settle a class action lawsuit alleging its DeMarini White Steel softball bats contain a defect that causes them to fail prematurely.

If you purchased a 2013 or 2014 model year Wilson-DeMarini White Steel softball bat, you may be entitled to benefits from the class action settlement, including a voucher worth $35 or $85.

Plaintiffs Hiroyaki Oda and Corey Roth filed the Wilson softball bat class action lawsuit in December 2015. They claim they purchased the allegedly defective White Steel softball bats for personal use in league softball play.

The plaintiffs allege that 13/14 White Steel softball bats were more prone to cracking and breaking during normal use than previous versions of the bat.

According to the White Steel softball bat class action lawsuit, Wilson failed to disclose the alleged defects and comply with its express warranty in violation of California law.

The plaintiffs’ allegations are similar to those in a class action lawsuit that was filed by an Illinois plaintiff in April 2017. The Illinois class action lawsuit alleged that Wilson DeMarini baseball bats, which can retail for more than $350, failed to meet standards established by the U.S. Specialty Sports Association, despite having a label indicating the bats are USSSA-compliant.

Wilson denies the allegations and maintains its White Steel softball bats were properly designed and manufactured. However, the manufacturer agreed to settle the White Steel class action lawsuit to avoid the risk and expense of trial.

The White Steel softball bat class action settlement was preliminarily approved on June 6, 2018.

Class Members who would like to opt out of or object to the White Steel settlement must do so no later than Aug. 20, 2018.

Who’s Eligible

Class Members of the DeMarini softball bat settlement include anyone who, between Dec. 23, 2011 and June 6, 2018, purchased one or more new 13/14 White Steels from Wilson or an authorized dealer of Wilson in the United States.

White Steel bats have the model number “WHI13” or “WHI14” printed on the barrel of the bat.

Potential Award

Vouchers worth $85 or $35, depending on whether you completed or initiated a warranty claim.

Class Members who made and completed a warranty claim with Wilson may receive an $85 Wilson voucher. If you initiated but did not complete the warranty process and you provided Wilson with your contact information, proof of purchase and indicated the White Steel bat was the reason for your claim, you are entitled to claim an $85 voucher.

Class Members who did not start or complete a warranty claim but can show proof of purchase for a 13/14 White Steel softball bat will receive a $35 Wilson voucher.

Proof of Purchase

Claimants will need to show proof of purchase for their White Steel softball bat, such as a receipt, credit card statement, pictures, and/or prior contact with Wilson about the bat.
