California Bearpaw Lassen WP Hiking Boots Class Action Settlement

A settlement has been reached in a class action lawsuit alleging Big 5 Sporting Goods sold Bearpaw Lassen WP hiking boots and misrepresented their waterproof nature.

If you bought Bearpaw Lassen WP hiking boots from a Big 5 Sporting Goods store in California between Jan. 25, 2012 and Oct. 20, 2017, you may be entitled to compensation from a class action settlement.

Plaintiff Jason Carmody initially filed the Big 5 class action lawsuit on Jan. 25, 2016, alleging Big 5 misrepresented the waterproof nature of Bearpaw Lassen WP hiking boots. These alleged misrepresentations violated California law, Carmody claims.

The Bearpaw Lassen hiking boots class action lawsuit asserts violations of the California Unfair Competition Law, the California False Advertising Law and the Consumer Legal Remedies Act.

The defendants deny the allegations but agreed to settle the Bearpaw hiking boots class action lawsuit to avoid the inconvenience, expense and risk associated with litigation.

Under the terms of the proposed Bearpaw Lassen hiking boots settlement, Class Members will be entitled to claim either a $5 cash payment or a merchandise voucher for $7.50 toward any purchase of goods or services at a California Big 5 store.

The number of eligible Class Members corresponds to the total number of Bearpaw Lassen WP hiking boots sold at Big 5 Sporting Goods stores in the state of California.

In addition to providing cash benefits and merchandise vouchers to Class Members who submit valid and timely Claim Forms, Big 5 will also sell its remaining stock of Bearpaw Lassen waterproof boots at a discount of at least $7.50 below the full retail price of $59.99, the Bearpaw class action settlement documents state.

Who’s Eligible

Class Members include anyone who purchased Bearpaw Lassen WP men’s and women’s hiking boots from a Big 5 Sporting Goods store in the state of California between Jan. 25, 2012 and Oct. 20, 2017.

Potential Award

Class Members may elect to receive a $5 cash payment or a $7.50 merchandise voucher that can be used for any purchase of goods or services at a Big 5 Sporting Goods Store in California. The merchandise voucher cannot be used for online purchases.

Proof of Purchase

No proof of purchase is required to claim a $7.50 merchandise voucher.

Proof of purchase is required for Class Members who file a claim for the $5 cash payment.
