Norms Restaurants settlement

Norms Restaurants LLC has agreed to settle a class action lawsuit alleging it failed to redeem gift cards for cash upon a customer’s request when the balance on the gift card was less than $10.

If you are a California consumer who possesses a Norms Restaurants gift card with a balance of less than $10 that was issued and/or activated between Jan. 1, 2008 and Dec. 31, 2015, you are entitled to redeem that gift card for cash. You may also qualify for benefits if you had a gift card that met these criteria but disposed of it because you were told by a Norms Restaurant employee in California that it could not be redeemed for cash.

Under California law, gift cards or gift certificates with a cash value of less than $10 are redeemable for its cash value. This requirement became effective on Jan. 1, 2008.

Norms Restaurants denies that it did anything wrong but agreed to settle the gift card class action lawsuit to avoid the expense and uncertainty of ongoing litigation.

In addition to allowing Class Members to redeem their gift cards for cash (or providing a new gift card to customers who discarded the gift card after learning it could not be redeemed for cash), Norms Restaurants has also agreed to review its policies and practices and update employee manuals to include language similar to the following: “California law requires that a gift card must be redeemed for cash, upon a customer’s request, when the gift card balance falls below $10.00.” Norms Restaurants will also post a reasonably-sized sign in an employee-only section of its California restaurants that include similar language.

I’ve got one for $.067 in my wallet from chick-fil-a, they won’t redeem my card either. I was so mad, I even wrote corporate and they didn’t write me back. I’ll never eat their again!

  3. Ashley S says:

I got a call asking for proof and was told that submitting a false claim was perjury. Forget it – it’s not worth making a claim. And it only applies to Californians.

    1. Lena says:

Thats terrible… proof that you threw it away? Or did you state you had a balance on a card that you currently have? Really?
