Residents of Louisville, Ky. who were affected by the 2015 GE Appliance Park fire can now claim benefits under a $1.2 million class action settlement.
This settlement is the product of a property damage and nuisance class action lawsuit filed over a fire that began on April 3, 2015 in Building 6 at GE Appliance Park, 4000 Buechel Bank Rd., Louisville, Ky. The settlement website refers to this fire as the AP6 Fire.
Plaintiffs Sherhonda Stewart, Beverly Sheppard and others who lived near GE Appliance Park during the fire filed this GE class action lawsuit a few days later.
The fire burned for three days, sending soot, ash and smoke into the surrounding neighborhoods. Plaintiffs claim the soot and ash caused property damage to their homes, businesses, and personal property.
Local fire officials ordered persons near the fire to shelter in place for about 48 hours. The radius of the shelter-in-place area ranged from one to two miles around GE Appliance Park. Once the order was lifted, plaintiffs say, cleanup took several days and was still going on when the plaintiffs filed their claim.
Derby Industries, a company that leased space in the building that burned, is also named as a defendant.
Under terms of the GE Appliance Park fire class action settlement, the defendants will create a $1.2 million settlement fund used to compensate certain local residents who were affected by the AP6 fire. Part of that fund is designated to reimburse out-of-pocket expenses related to the fire and to shelter-in-place advisories and that were incurred no later than Aug. 7, 2015.
The settlement fund does not include almost $650,000 that GE and Derby Industries have already paid to area residents for property damage claims.
Claim Forms must be submitted by mail. Claimants must submit one claim form per person.
Class Members who want to opt out of the settlement or object to its terms must do so in writing no later than Dec. 17, 2017.
Who’s Eligible
The settlement Class covers persons who on April 3, 2015 lived in or owned residential property either within a two-mile radius of the former AP6 facility, or within a two- to three-mile radius of AP6 and bounded by Fern Valley Road to the south and by Route 150 to the northeast.
Potential Award
Up to $30.
Payment amounts will depend on the distance between the Class Member’s property and GE Appliance Park. Estimated payments per distance are:
- Within one mile: $30
- Between one and two miles: $20
- Between two and three miles: $10
Actual payment amounts may be lower, depending on how many valid and timely claims are received.
Claims for out-of-pocket expenses may be paid on a pro rata basis if the claimed amounts exceed the portion of the settlement fund set aside for such claims.
Proof of Purchase
Class Members claiming out-of-pocket expenses must submit documentation of those expenses.
Those submitting claims on behalf of children must submit documents showing they are the child’s parent, legal guardian, or representative. Those submitting claims on behalf of deceased persons must attach a court order showing that they are the legal representative of the estate.

I think GE should have sent someone to look at the damage. My house all that went into our roof vents, chimney, under vinyl siding. We are breathing it still and think it’s allergies or a cold. They should have had everyone air ducts and chimney cleaned. Cars washed. I’d rather know that’s corrected more than anything. Attys will get all the money. This could have/ should have, been handled better. Show care and concern. People appreciate the little things. Maybe they will turn around and purchase your products to pay it forward. Character better than greed.
As far as the Ge settlement we had debre all over 3 cars in my drive way and yard. We were given a phone number to file a claim in which we were ignored. All of our cars are were washed at Thomas car wash. You could see the smoke rolling I’m not even sure how safe the air was? I think we received a slap in the face with this deal. Im not talking about a few ashes they were covered. We live within a couple miles from GE. I am not sure what to do I didn’t keep my receipts. I am trying to find the pics I took.
