Cinfed Federal Credit Union agreed to a $700,000 class action lawsuit settlement to resolve claims it failed to prevent a 2023 data breach that compromised sensitive consumer information.
The Cinfed Federal Credit Union settlement benefits individuals whose private information the Cinfed Federal Credit Union data breach compromised between Sept. 22-25, 2023.
The Cinfed Federal Credit Union class action lawsuit claims the credit union failed to implement reasonable cybersecurity measures, which allowed a data breach to occur in Sept. 2023. During the Cinfed Federal Credit Union data breach, an unauthorized third party allegedly gained access to sensitive consumer information, including Social Security numbers and financial information.
Cinfed Federal Credit Union is a member-owned financial institution based in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Cinfed Federal Credit Union hasn’t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to pay $700,000 to resolve these allegations.
Under the terms of the Cinfed Federal Credit Union settlement, class members can receive up to $5,000 for documented out-of-pocket expenses related to the data breach. This includes unreimbursed fraud or identity theft losses, professional fees, credit expenses, transportation costs, verified fraud, miscellaneous expenses and other unreimbursed expenses linked to the Cinfed Federal Credit Union data breach.
Class members can also receive a pro rata cash payment from the settlement. These payments are estimated at $65 but may increase or decrease based on the number of claims filed with the settlement.
The deadline for exclusion and objection was Dec. 10, 2024.
The final approval hearing for the Cinfed Federal Credit Union data breach settlement is scheduled for Feb. 11, 2025.
To receive settlement benefits, class members must submit a valid claim form by Jan. 8, 2025.
