Litigation over an alleged exposure of sensitive user data by Yapstone has culminated in a class action settlement.
According to the plaintiffs, Yapstone Holdings Inc. (formerly Yapstone Inc.) allowed some Yapstone users’ personally identifiable information to be exposed through the use of unsecured web addresses between July 15, 2014 and Aug. 5, 2015.
The potentially exposed information may include Yapstone users’ names, addresses, dates of birth, bank account information, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, or passport numbers.
Upon discovering the exposure, Yapstone sent an Incident Notice to potentially affected persons in September 2015. The company offered them two years’ worth of credit protection and fraud resolution at no charge.
The plaintiffs accuse Yapstone of failing to take reasonable steps to keep its users’ data secure. Yapstone continues to deny the plaintiffs’ allegations and maintains that there is no evidence the exposed information was ever intercepted or misused.
Under terms of the settlement, qualifying claimants may receive 12 months of free identity monitoring service. Yapstone must also set up a $120,000 fund to be donated to Public Justice and the Center for Long-Term Cybersecurity at the UC Berkeley School of Information.
The settlement also requires Yapstone to implement new measures designed to improve its data security.
Who’s Eligible
Persons may be eligible for settlement benefits if their Social Security number, driver’s license number, or passport number was among the information potentially exposed; if they were sent an Incident Notice from Yapstone; and if they did not sign up for the free two-year credit protection and fraud resolution offered in the Incident Notice.
