APA assessment fee settlement

The American Psychological Association (APA) and the American Psychological Association Practice Organization (APAPO) have agreed to settle several class action lawsuits concerning payments of a “practice assessment” by certain members of APA to APAPO beginning in dues year 2001. If you paid a practice assessment to the American Psychological Association Practice Organization, you may be entitled to a cash payment from the class action settlement.

The proposed APA assessment fee settlement will resolve several class action lawsuits alleging the APA and APAPO engaged in unfair and deceptive practices by representing that payment of an annual “practice assessment” or “special assessment” was required for membership in the American Psychological Association, even though payment of the practice assessment was only required for membership in the American Psychological Association Practice Organization.

The APA and APAPO deny the allegations but agreed to settle the class action lawsuits to avoid the burden and expense of ongoing litigation. In addition to providing cash benefits to eligible Class Members, the defendants will also change their policies to make clear that the APAPO membership dues are not required for membership in APA.

UPDATE: On Jan. 13, 2016, settlement checks were mailed to all Class Members who filed a valid Claim Form in the APA assessment fee class action settlement.

Who’s Eligible

Class Members of the APA assessment fee settlement include: “All persons in the United States who are current or former members of APA and paid the APAPO Practice Assessment for APA dues years 2001 through Feb. 12, 2015.”

Potential Award

Varies. The amount each Class Member will receive depends on the total amount of the APAPO practice assessment paid, as determined by the Settlement Administrator.
