Christian Broadcasting Network agreed to a $4 million class action lawsuit settlement to resolve claims it shared user data with Meta, the parent company of Facebook, without user consent.
The Christian Broadcasting Network settlement benefits individuals who used login credentials for any of the network’s websites and requested or obtained video content from any of its services between March 28, 2022, and May 28, 2024.
According to the class action lawsuit, Christian Broadcasting Network violated the federal Video Privacy Protection Act (VPPA) by sharing user data with Meta through the use of a Meta Pixel tracker on its websites. The VPPA prohibits video service providers from sharing information that identifies users and the videos they watch without user consent.
Christian Broadcasting Network is a Christian news and entertainment website that offers video content.
Christian Broadcasting Network has not admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to pay $4 million to resolve the VPPA class action lawsuit.
Under the terms of the Christian Broadcasting Network settlement, class members can receive an equal share of the net settlement fund. Exact VPPA settlement payment amounts will vary depending on the number of participating class members and the amount deducted for fees and costs. No payment estimates are available.
In addition to providing cash benefits, Christian Broadcasting Network agreed to suspend the use of Meta Pixel and other tracking technologies that violate the VPPA.
The deadline for exclusion and objection is April 29, 2025.
