$4.995M lemonade.com privacy violations class action settlement

Lemonade Inc. agreed to a $4.995 million class action lawsuit settlement to resolve claims it shared life insurance applicants’ health information with third parties without their consent.

The lemonade.com settlement benefits consumers who accessed lemonade.com, either directly or through bestow.com or northamericancompany.com, and entered answers to health-related questions on a life insurance application between March 15, 2021, and Sept. 28, 2023.

According to the lemonade.com class action lawsuit, the insurance company violated consumer privacy laws by sharing life insurance applicants’ health information with third parties. Plaintiffs in the case say they did not consent to this and would not have applied for life insurance quotes through Lemonade if they knew their information would be shared.

Lemonade Inc. is an insurance company that offers life insurance policies through its partners Bestow and North American Company for Life and Health Insurance.

The company hasn’t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to the $4.995 million class action settlement to resolve these allegations.

Under the terms of the lemonade.com settlement, class members can receive a cash payment of up to $14.86. Exact payments will vary depending on the number of claims filed with the settlement.

The settlement also requires the insurance company to stop sharing protected health information with third parties.

The deadline for exclusion and objection is Jan. 21, 2025.

The final approval hearing for the lemonade.com class action lawsuit settlement is scheduled for Feb. 6, 2025.

To receive settlement benefits, class members must submit a valid claim form by Jan. 21, 2025.

Consumers who accessed lemonade.com, either directly or through www.bestow.com or www.northamericancompany.com, and entered answers to health-related questions on an application for life insurance in the United States between March 15, 2021, and Sept. 28, 2023
