Andrews McMeel Universal agreed to a $350,000 data breach class action settlement to resolve claims it failed to prevent a 2022 data breach that compromised sensitive information.
The Andrews McMeel Universal settlement benefits individuals whose private information was compromised in the data breach and who received a data breach notification.
The data breach class action lawsuit claims Andrews McMeel Universal failed to implement reasonable cybersecurity measures, leading to a November 2022 data breach that compromised sensitive information. The plaintiffs claim the company could have prevented the breach with reasonable cybersecurity measures.
Andrews McMeel Universal is a media and entertainment company that connects consumers with content through syndication, publishing, licensing and merchandising.
Under the terms of the Andrews McMeel Universal settlement, class members can receive reimbursement for documented out-of-pocket expenses related to the data breach, such as credit report and monitoring fees, up to $450 for ordinary expenses and lost time or up to $4,500 for extraordinary losses. Ordinary expenses may include bank fees, communication charges, travel expenses, credit fees, up to four hours of lost time at a rate of $25 per hour up to four hours. Extraordinary losses may include documented damages related to fraud or identity theft.
In addition to providing reimbursement for losses, the settlement also offers three years of single-bureau credit monitoring services with $1 million in identity theft insurance. Andrews McMeel Universal also implemented enhanced data security measures as part of the settlement to protect class members’ private information.
The deadline for exclusion and objection was Nov. 19, 2024.
The final approval hearing for the AMU data breach settlement is scheduled for Dec. 13, 2024.
The deadline to submit a claim form is Dec. 19, 2024.
Who’s Eligible
Individuals whom Andrews McMeel Universal identified as being among those individuals impacted by the data incident, including those who were sent a notice of the data incident
Potential Award
Up to $4,950 in cash reimbursement plus three years of credit monitoring
Proof of Purchase
Documentation of out-of-pocket expenses, such as receipts, bills or bank statements
