Lumos Labs Inc., the marketer of the Lumosity brain-training program, has recently reached a settlement with the Federal Trade Commission over allegations it used deceptive advertising and made claims that were not supported by science.
According to the FTC lawsuit, some of the deceptive advertising claims suggested that using Lumosity could improve performance in school, work and athletic pursuits; delay age-related mental decline; and help people with traumatic brain injury, ADHD, PTSD and other health conditions.
Lumosity was widely promoted on television, radio, social media, blog posts and email communication. According to the FTC lawsuit, Lumosity consists of 40 games that are supposedly designed to train specific parts of the brain.
Lumos Labs sold online and mobile app subscriptions, and customers could choose to pay $14.95 each month for a monthly subscription or $299.95 for a lifetime membership, according to the FTC lawsuit.
The $2 million Lumosity settlement was announced in January.
“Lumosity preyed on consumers’ fears about age-related cognitive decline, suggesting their games could stave off memory loss, dementia, and even Alzheimer’s disease,” said Jessica Rich, the Director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection. “But Lumosity simply did not have the science to back up its ads.”
If you subscribed to Lumosity, you may be entitled to a refund from the FTC. Eligible subscribers were recently notified by email and should have received a Claim Number and PIN.

4 thoughts onFTC Lumosity Brain-Training Program Settlement
I have contacted Lumosity and they have not provided me with a claim or pin number. I am documenting my contacts with them, and faxing to the Claims Administrator the information about the amount I spent, which was well over $239. I also printed out the payment information from my account page.
I expect the FTC will look into the fact that many of us were not contacted and should have been.
Why over $239? I spent 119 for two years which is money I wouldn’t mind getting back.
I also did not receive an email with claim number or pin number, very frustrating.. The proof was sent by mail never recd verification
I have proof that I paid for a lifetime membership in May of 2013. I called the number you list for the FTC and they do not have my name on their list. I have never received the email with the required information of a claim and pin number. Therefore, I am out $299.95? I work hard for my money like everyone else and I hate to think that because I never got an email, even though I have proof of my lifetime Lumosity membership, that I am out of luck! Can you Help?
