HIKO energy class action

HIKO Energy has agreed to a class action settlement over allegations stemming from its electricity and natural gas rates.

Plaintiff Yang Chen of New Jersey filed the energy class action lawsuit after allegedly paying eight times as much for his electric supply through HIKO, compared to its competitor Public Service Electric and Gas Company.

In his first month of HIKO electricity, Chen alleges he was charged $0.89 per kilowatt hour for a total of $868 compared to what he would have been billed through PSE&G for an estimated $107.

Customers who paid for HIKO Energy for gas or electricity prior to December 2014 may benefit from this class action settlement, up to $175 in future credit.

Those individuals who want to object or opt-out of the HIKO settlement must do so by Apr. 4, 2016.

HIKO denies all wrongdoings but agreed to the terms of the settlement to avoid the cost of further litigation.

I was never notified of this class action. Never received a penny back from either being overcharged or for the “free month program” that HIKO offers as advertisement tool only, and counts only on customers not claiming it by creating a system where customers have to jump thru many hoops in order to request that “free month” reimbursement. I called them to see if they will reimburse me for the seven free months for those seven years that I did not know how to jump thru the hoops that they created. The sneaky advertisement that they use to lure you away from your local energy supplier sounds like you get your free month automatically. But no, apparently, you have to ask for it in writing etc. every year. There are no reminders or automatic checks that come your way. This is on top of inflated rates. The only name I have for HIKO – bunch of crooks. They owe me thousands of dollars…. How do I go about getting my money that they owe me just for those “free months”.
