Progressive agreed to a $3.25 million class action lawsuit settlement to resolve claims that a data breach may have exposed consumer information.

The Progressive settlement benefits individuals whose personal information may have been viewed by an unauthorized individual due to a security event one of Progressive’s third-party call center vendors experienced from May 2021-May 2023.

According to the class action lawsuit, Progressive failed to protect consumers from a data breach that compromised sensitive information, such as Social Security numbers and financial account data. Plaintiffs claim the insurer could have prevented the Progressive data breach by implementing reasonable cybersecurity measures.

Progressive is an insurance company that offers coverage for cars, homes, businesses and more.

Progressive hasn’t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to the $3.25 million settlement to resolve the data breach class action lawsuit.

Under the terms of the Progressive settlement, class members can receive up to $5,000 for documented losses related to the data breach. These losses can include fraudulent charges, identity theft damages, credit expenses and more.

Class members who did not experience documented losses can receive a cash payment from the settlement instead of a reimbursement payment. The amount of these alternative payments will vary depending on the number of claims filed with the settlement and the amount of funds remaining after documented loss payments distribution. No payment estimates are available at this time.

All class members are eligible for three years of credit monitoring and insurance services. This service includes $1 million and three-bureau credit monitoring.

The deadline for exclusion and objection was Jan. 17, 2025.

The final approval hearing for the Progressive data breach settlement is scheduled for Feb. 25, 2025.

To receive settlement benefits, class members must submit a valid claim form by Feb. 18, 2025.
