A $2 million Catholic University of America COVID-19 tuition class action settlement resolves claims over remote learning during the pandemic.

The settlement benefits undergraduate or graduate students enrolled at the Catholic University of America during the spring 2020 semester who did not withdraw by Mar. 18, 2020. These students must have paid tuition and fees to the university from a source other than a scholarship, grant or tuition remission, and their tuition or fees must not have been fully refunded. The university officers, trustees and their family members are excluded from the class.

The Catholic University of America class action lawsuit alleges students who attended the Catholic University of America for the spring 2020 semester are entitled to partial refunds of tuition and fees because the university transitioned to remote learning in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The university denies any wrongdoing and liability and maintains it transitioned to remote learning to protect the health of its students, faculty and staff and to comply with mandatory government shutdown orders.

The Catholic University of America is a private university in Washington, D.C.

A portion of the Catholic University settlement will be used to pay attorney’s fees and expenses. The remaining amount will be divided equally among the approximately 5,070 class members.

No action is necessary to receive the payment as checks will be mailed to each class member’s last known mailing address. Class members can visit the settlement website to update mailing addresses or elect to receive the payment via Venmo or PayPal.

The exclusion and objection deadline is Dec. 23, 2024.

The final approval hearing is scheduled for Jan. 23, 2025.
