A settlement has been proposed in a class action lawsuit concerning the electric power steering system in certain Toyota Corolla vehicles. If you are a former or current owner or lessee of a 2009 or 2010 model year Toyota Corolla, you may be entitled to benefits from the class action settlement.

If approved, the Toyota Corolla settlement will resolve a class action lawsuit alleging that the electric power steering (EPS) system in certain model year 2009 and 2010 Toyota Corolla vehicles (excluding XRS grade) caused vehicles to suddenly veer to one direction during normal use.

Toyota Motor Corporation and Toyota Motor Sales USA Inc. deny that there is any issue with the EPS system, and assert that the issues brought forth in the class action lawsuit are simply due to a driver’s specific preference. Toyota believes it has addressed the concerns brought forth in the Corolla class action lawsuit by releasing a re-tuned electronic control unit (ECU) that provides an alternative steering feel for drivers who were dissatisfied with the original on-center steering feel.

Without admitting wrongdoing, the Toyota defendants have agreed to settle the Corolla power steering class action lawsuit to avoid the cost and risk of further litigation.

Class Members who wish to exclude themselves from the Toyota Corolla settlement must submit a request for exclusion no later than Feb. 8, 2016.

Who’s Eligible

Class Members of the Toyota Corolla class action settlement include current and former owners of model year 2009 and 2010 Toyota Corolla vehicles (excluding XRS grade).

NOTE: If you paid to have the re-tuned ECU installed and the procedure was covered by warranty or goodwill, you are not eligible for benefits from the Toyota Corolla settlement.

Potential Award

Varies. The benefits each Class Member is eligible to receive depends on several factors. Toyota has reviewed its records to identify the specific benefit each individual Class Member is eligible to receive. To find out more about the benefits you are entitled to receive, you may enter the Claim Identification Number that was listed on the postcard notice you received in the mail.

If you believe you are entitled to other benefits, you must submit a Request for Review Form and required documentation by Feb. 15, 2016.

Benefits offered by this Toyota Corolla class action settlement include the following:

  • No Cost Re-Tuned ECU Installation for Current Owners or Lessees. Class Members who made a properly documented complaint to Toyota on or before April 30, 2015 about the on-center steering feel of the vehicle may have the re-tuned ECU.
  • Discounted Re-Tuned ECU Installation for Current Owners or Lessees. Class Members who submit a timely and valid Claim Form may be eligible to receive a 50 percent discount on the part and labor costs of installing the re-tuned ECU by a Toyota dealer.
  • Reimbursement to Former and Current Owners or Lessees. Under the terms of the proposed class action settlement, Toyota will reimburse up to $695 to each eligible Class Member for whom Toyota has a record that he or she paid for the part and labor costs for the installation of the re-tuned ECU.
