American Cleaners and Laundry Co. Inc. has agreed to settle a class action lawsuit alleging the dry cleaning company charged customers an Environmental Surcharge in violation of Missouri law. If you paid an Environmental Surcharge for dry cleaning services to American Cleaners stores in Missouri between Aug. 15, 2007 and Aug. 15, 2012, you could be eligible for benefits from the class action settlement.

Who’s Eligible

Class Members of the American Cleaners class action settlement include anyone who paid an Environmental Surcharge to American Cleaners stores in Missouri as part of a dry cleaning services purchase between Aug. 15, 2007 and Aug. 15, 2012.

Potential Award

The class action settlement will provide Class Members who submit valid Claim Forms with eight $1.00 vouchers or the total amount of surcharges they can verify they paid to American Cleaners for dry cleaning services between Aug. 15, 2007 and Aug. 15, 2012, whichever amount is higher. Class Members who can verify payments to American Cleaners in excess of $200 during this time period are entitled to receive vouchers for 4 percent of their total payments.

Proof of Purchase

None required. However, Class Members who can verify the amount they paid to American Cleaners stores in Missouri may be entitled to greater benefits from the class action settlement.

Shatonya Green v. American Cleaners and Laundry Co. Inc., et al., Case No. 12SL-CC03095, in the Circuit Court of St. Louis County, State of Missouri.

Case Summary

The class action lawsuit alleges that American Cleaners unlawfully charged its customers an Environmental Surcharge in connection with the sale of dry cleaning services in violation of Missouri law. The parties disagreed about whether the Environmental Surcharge was proper. American Cleaners denies all liability but has agreed to settle the class action lawsuit to avoid the expense and uncertainty of litigation.

The American Cleaners class action settlement received preliminary approval on Jan. 30, 2014.
