Yes Energy Management agreed to pay $2.8 million to resolve allegations it charged administration fees to Maryland tenants without a collection agency license.

The Yes Energy Management settlement benefits Maryland residents who paid Yes Energy an administration fee between Oct. 4, 2018, and March 19, 2024.

The class action lawsuit alleges Yes Energy Management charged unlawful administration fees when Maryland tenants paid their utility bills electronically. According to plaintiffs in the case, the company acted as an unlicensed collections agency by charging these fees in violation of Maryland licensing laws.

Yes Energy Management is a third-party utility billing company that works with rental management agencies.

Yes Energy hasn’t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to a $2.8 million class action lawsuit settlement to resolve the claims.

Under the terms of the Yes Energy Management settlement, class members can receive pro rata payments from the net settlement fund. Payments will vary depending on the amount each claimant paid in unlawful Yes Energy fees and how many class members file a claim with the settlement. No payment estimates are available at this time.

The initial round of settlement notices was sent on May 19, 2024, with a second supplemental round of notices sent on Oct. 14, 2024. Deadlines for this case will vary depending on when class members received their notices.

For class members who received the initial notice, the deadline for exclusion and objection was July 16, 2024. For class members who received the supplemental notice, the deadline for exclusion and objection is Dec. 13, 2024.

The final hearing is scheduled for Jan. 31, 2025.
