Heartland Payment Systems agreed to pay $18.25 million to resolve claims it charged illegal fees to MySchoolBucks users.
The Heartland Payment Systems settlement benefits consumers who used a credit or debit card to upload money to MySchoolBucks to purchase school lunches between June 18, 2013, and July 31, 2019, and whose last transaction was on or after Jan. 1, 2015.
According to a class action lawsuit, Heartland charged illegal “program fees” every time a MySchoolBucks user uploaded money to their child’s lunch account. The plaintiffs argue they would not have been duped into overpaying if they had known the true cost of MySchoolBucks fees.
Heartland Payment Systems is a payment processing company that provides services for a variety of businesses, including schools. Heartland partners with schools to provide MySchoolBucks, a platform that allows parents to upload money to their children’s lunch accounts.
Heartland has not admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to an $18.25 million class action settlement to resolve the allegations.
Under the terms of the Heartland Payment Systems settlement, class members can receive a cash payment based on the number of program fees they paid during the class period. Class members who paid a higher number of program fees will receive a larger share of the settlement fund. Exact payment amounts will vary.
The deadline for exclusion and objection is Aug. 28, 2025.
The final approval hearing for the MySchoolBucks fees settlement is scheduled for Sept. 25, 2025.
To receive settlement benefits, class members must submit a valid claim form by Aug. 20, 2025.

Still charging this “program fee” as of 2024-2025 school year. I began using this as part of my kids’ school lunch program in 2022 and just checked all my receipts. Fee was $2.95 as of last school year. This school year it is up to $3.25 per transaction. Fees are charged per transaction regardless of the subtotal of the reloading value. Received this email 7/21/2025, just assumed I had no choice but to pay the fee each time:
Dear MySchoolBucks Customer,
Thank you for choosing to use MySchoolBucks to securely and conveniently pay for your student’s school meals. Beginning on August 1st, we’re updating the program fee you pay at checkout in MySchoolBucks when funding your student’s meal account to $3.25 for each credit/debit card payment.
Please note that if your district accepts electronic checks, the program fee will remain the same. Additionally, the maximum meal payment limit will increase to $150 per transaction.
Due to rising operational costs, this adjustment to our per-transaction program fee for school meals is necessary to continue providing you with the best and most secure online payment experience.
If you would like to make changes to your automatic payment settings, please log into your MySchoolBucks account. For questions, please call our support team at 855-832-5226.
Thank you,
The MySchoolBucks Team

You won’t get “added.” File a claim yourself.
Please add me I have 4 kids, and use my school bucks all the time.
