Uber and Lyft have agreed to pay about $140 million to settle claims from the Massachusetts attorney general’s office that the rideshare companies violated state laws by misclassifying drivers as independent contractors.
The Uber Lyft class action settlement benefits individuals who used the Uber and Lyft driver apps to provide rides to passengers in Massachusetts between July 14, 2020, and July 2, 2024.
The Massachusetts attorney general’s office filed a lawsuit against Uber and Lyft in 2020, claiming the rideshare companies violated state laws by misclassifying drivers as independent contractors. As a result of this misclassification, drivers allegedly did not receive the wages and benefits they were entitled to under state law.
Uber and Lyft are rideshare companies that allow drivers to use their own vehicles to transport passengers. Drivers can choose to work for one or both of the companies.
Uber and Lyft have not admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to pay about $140 million to resolve the Massachusetts attorney general’s allegations.
Under the terms of the Uber Lyft driver class action lawsuit settlement, drivers can receive a cash payment. Payments will vary depending on the number of trips a driver completed during the class period. Drivers who completed more trips will receive a larger share of the settlement fund.
The deadline for exclusion is Sept. 26, 2024 and the deadline for objection is Oct. 11, 2024.
The final approval hearing for the Uber Lyft class action settlement is scheduled for Oct. 24, 2024.
No claim form is required to benefit from the settlement. However, drivers must update their address on the website by August 31, 2025. Drivers who did not receive a notice, misplaced it, or who cannot locate their unique Access Code should contact the Settlement Administrator at the number below.
Earlier this year, Uber agreed to a $290 million settlement to resolve a New York investigation into claims it unlawfully deducted sales tax and Black Car Fund fees from driver earnings.
Who’s Eligible
Uber and Lyft drivers who provided rides to passengers in Massachusetts between July 14, 2020, and July 2, 2024, may be eligible for a payment. Casual drivers who drove an average of fewer than 8 miles per week during the class period may not be eligible for restitution. The settlement is intended for drivers who drove more than casually and earned less than the minimum wage after accounting for expenses.
