Sixt has agreed to a $11.07 million class action lawsuit settlement to resolve claims it charged renters for damage to vehicles in violation of rental agreements.
The Sixt Rent a Car settlement benefits U.S. renters who were sent a damage claim after Jan. 1, 2014, for a vehicle rental taking place before June 30, 2019.
According to the class action lawsuit, Sixt charged renters for vehicle damage in a way that violated the terms of rental agreements. Plaintiffs in the case say Sixt charged for diminished value, estimated repair costs, loss of use and other fees, despite not actually repairing the vehicles or losing the use of the vehicles.
Sixt is a car rental company with locations around the world, including in the United States.
Sixt hasn’t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to a $11.07 million class action settlement to resolve these allegations.
Under the terms of the Sixt Rent a Car settlement, class members can receive a 70% refund of the disputed Sixt damage charges they paid to Sixt.
Sixt paid a total of $2.87 million to fund consumer refunds. Refunds will vary depending on the amount each class member paid in eligible charges, but each claimant is estimated to receive an average of $356.67. Actual payment amounts will vary depending on individual claim details.
In addition to providing customer refunds, Sixt also agreed to stop collecting on disputed damage charges. This relief is valued at $6.6 million in total, or an average of $220 per class member.
Sixt will provide further relief to consumers by requesting that negative credit reporting related to the damage claim charges be removed from consumer reports.
The deadline for exclusion and objection is May 27, 2025.
The final approval hearing for the Sixt damage charges settlement is scheduled for July 15, 2025.
In order to receive a settlement payment, class members must submit a valid claim form by Aug. 15, 2025.
