Certain current and former canine handlers with Global K9 Protection Group may be eligible to benefit from a $425,000 settlement resolving claims the company failed to pay proper overtime and other wages.

The Class includes two groups: the California Class and the Collective Class.

The California Class includes individuals currently or previously employed by Global K9 Protection Group in California as a canine handler between April 21, 2016, and Feb. 15, 2021.

The Collective Class includes anyone formerly employed by Global K9 Protection Group as a canine handler employee between April 21, 2016, and Feb. 15, 2021, who opted to join the class action lawsuit’s Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) collective action.

The class action lawsuit had alleged the company either misclassified its canine handlers and site leads as exempt or otherwise failed to pay non-exempt canine handlers and site leads under the law, meaning the company did not pay overtime and regular wages appropriately, failed to provide adequate breaks, failed to reimburse employees for work expenses, and violated other related laws.

Global K9 denies any allegations of wrongdoing, but the parties have agreed to a settlement to avoid the cost and risk associated with continuing litigation.

The company provides “sustainable and compliant cargo screening solutions” using canines, according to its website. The service is used in 32 cities across the United States, and the canines have performed nearly 7.8 million operational searches.

Class Members will receive a portion of the settlement fund after attorneys fees and other costs are deducted.

A notice about the settlement was sent to Class Members on June 18, 2021.

Those who did not receive an email notification will receive a paper notice via mail after July 9, 2021.

The notice includes an estimated amount of the Class Member’s expected payment.

Anyone who wishes to dispute the amount shown on their notice must mail a written dispute and supporting documentation to the administrator by Aug. 13, 2021.

Class Members do not need to file a claim in order to receive a payment.

The settlement will be funded by Global K9 in installments, with the last one due March 31, 2022.

Class Members receiving a payment will be provided with an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Form 1099-MISC for the non-wage portions of their payment.

A final hearing in the Global K9 Protection Group overtime settlement will be held Aug. 26, 2021.

The deadline to opt out of or object to the settlement is Aug. 13, 2021.

Settlement payment amount disputes must also be filed by Aug. 13, 2021.
