Physical books ownership survey overview:

  • Who: YouGov released a survey on physical book ownership in the United States.
  • Why: The survey revealed a total of 85% of Americans own at least one physical book, with older, wealthier and more educated Americans owning a greater amount.
  • Where: The survey comprised Americans nationwide.

Eighty-five percent of Americans own at least one physical book, according to a recently released survey from YouGov.

The survey found a higher number of Americans own less books than more, with one in five revealing they own between one and 10 physical books, while only 14% own between 11 and 25 books and 13% say they own between 26 and 50.

Including the 9% of respondents who said they own zero books, 69% of Americans fail to own at least 100 physical copies of books, while 25% say they own at least 100 books and 4% say they own between 500 and 1,000 books, according to YouGov.

Physical book ownership is more common for Americans than e-books, according to the survey, which found only around 50% of Americans own at least one e-book and only 9% saying they own at least 100.

Older, wealthier, more educated Americans own greater number of physical books, survey says

The survey found demographic variables play a role in the amount of physical copies of books Americans own, with older, wealthier and more formally educated individuals tending to own more, according to the survey.

In terms of age, 19% of Americans between the ages of 31 and 35 responded they owned at least 100 physical books, compared to 31% of individuals aged between 51 and 55 and 42% between the ages of 71 and 75.

In regard to income, 15% of Americans who earn less than 75% of the median national income say they own no books and only 16% say they own at least 100, according to the survey.

Among Americans who earn at least 200% of the median national income, only 4% say they own no physical books while 40% say they own at least 100.

In other book-related news, a New York federal judge in September dismissed claims Amazon monopolized retail book sales and worked with major book publishers to inflate the price of print books in the United States.

Close to 200, home repair and cook books mainly with some early education books for small kids.

  2. Katie Snow says:

I own several books, over 100. Some dating back to the 1700’s. I am by no means money wealthy, but I do have a wealth of knowledge.
