Lawsuits have been filed by users of Roundup weed-killer alleging it causes cancer.

Pharmaceutical giant Bayer AG is asking a California appeals court to overturn a $78 million judgment awarded to a school groundskeeper who says he developed cancer after years of exposure to Bayer’s weed-killing products, Reuters reports.

Roundup Cancer Lawsuit

In the company’s filing with the court of appeals, Bayer claims no evidence has linked its products to cancer and that several decades of research prove that the chemicals in their products are safe. Bayer weed-killers Roundup and Ranger Pro, which contain the chemical glyphosate, are alleged to cause cancer.

If the appeal is denied, Bayer is seeking a new trial on the grounds that a lower court judge improperly prevented jurors from hearing important evidence about  glyphosate exposure and Roundup safety.

Plaintiff Dewayne J.’s lawsuit says that he was diagnosed with terminal cancer at age 42 after years of spraying Bayer weed-killers during his job as a school groundskeeper, getting soaked in weed killer on at least one occasion.

What is Roundup?

Roundup is a popular weed-killer sold by Monsanto, later purchased by Bayer. The active chemical in the weed-killer is glyphosate, the most widely used herbicide in the United States. The herbicide spray was introduced to the market in 1973 and has been widely distributed and sold ever since. However, despite years of believing the chemicals in Roundup were safe, many recent lawsuits are claiming that glyphosate, Roundup’s active chemical, may cause cancer.

What is Glyphosate?

Glyphosate is a chemical used in Roundup and other weed-killing sprays. Some recent evidence suggests that exposure to glyphosate may be linked to the development of certain cancers, including non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Who is at Risk?

Since Roundup has been a highly popular weed-killing spray for several decades, it’s likely that hundreds of thousands of consumers have used or been exposed to the dangerous chemical during their lifetime. Professional landscapers, gardeners, and groundskeepers may be at risk of coming into contact with this chemical, as well as home and hobby gardeners.

The World Health Organization has classified glyphosate as “probably carcinogenic to humans” and as of January 2019, Roundup is banned from being sold, distributed, or used in France.

CNN reports that Bayer is facing more than 11,000 lawsuits regarding glyphosate exposure and the safety of Roundup.

Victims who have used Roundup weed-killer and have been diagnosed with cancer, including non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, may qualify to file a Roundup cancer lawsuit. Hiring an experienced attorney may help you win your case and receive compensation for your injuries, illness and pain and suffering.

If you or a loved one developed cancer after using Roundup as a farm worker or home gardener, you may have a legal claim. Legal migrant farm workers may also seek help. Learn more by filling out the form on this page for a FREE case evaluation.
