Airbnb recently agreed to settle class action claims that they overcharged its Canadian customers for reservations.
The settlement will benefit individuals residing in Quebec, Canada who – while located in the province between Aug. 22, 2014 and June 26, 2019 – made an Airbnb booking for anywhere in the world but paid a higher price than initially advertised. Bookings made for business travel are not eligible.
The Airbnb class action claimed that the company violated Quebec consumer protection laws when advertising their reservation prices. Although the company marketed their accommodations at a certain price, they allegedly added 13 to 17 percent more in “service fees” during the final steps of the transactions.
Although the company denied that they violated Quebec law, Airbnb allegedly made changes to its pricing display on June 26, 2019. The changes reportedly show accommodation prices which include fees.
Airbnb has not admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to settle the claims against them. The proposed Class has been approved by the court for settlement purposes.
The settlement will provide Class Members with redeemable credits for Airbnb credits worth up to $45.
Class Members do not have to file a Claim Form in order to benefit from the settlement. Instead, eligible consumers will be contacted with a hyperlink that they can follow to claim their redeemable credit. The hyperlink will reportedly be sent in an email.
The deadline for exclusion from the settlement is Nov. 15, 2019. The final approval hearing for the settlement is scheduled for Dec. 3, 2019. Objections to the settlement can be made at the final approval hearing.
