Patients who discover they have eye floaters after Avastin injection, or other complications such as an infection, may be able to pursue a lawsuit.
Avastin Silicone Eye Injections
Avastin (also known by its generic name, bevacizumab) is a medication used to help alleviate symptoms of certain eye diseases. Avastin was actually first used as a cancer treatment, but along the way doctors found this second use for it. Avastin is often prescribed to treat eye diseases including macular degeneration, retinal vein occlusion, diabetic macular edema and diabetic retinopathy.
Officially, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has only approved Avastin for cancer treatment. These other uses are prescribed off-label, which is both normal and legal; indeed, it is quite common for doctors to prescribe drugs for off-label purposes.
While the off-label uses of Avastin are perfectly acceptable, the method in which Avastin is injected may actually open patients up to unexpected risks.
Avastin Eye Injection and Silicone Floaters
The use of Avasatin eye injections has been linked with a number of problems. These side effects are not linked with the drug bevacizumab itself, but instead with the way this drug is injected.
Avastin eye injections use a pre-filled syringe that may have spent days or even several weeks waiting around after pharmacies have purchased them from distributors. Silicone oil is used to lubricate the syringes on the needle, barrel and plunger.
Since the syringes are pre-filled and can wait around for up to several weeks, particles of the silicone oil are able to migrate over time into the other substance, mixing and allowing silicone particles to be injected into a patient’s eye. A patient can undergo Avastin eye injection and silicone floaters are left behind, according to a number of patients.
Patients report that an Avastin eye injection and silicone floaters can lead to a number of serious side effects, including but not limited to the following:
- Increased intraocular pressure
- Inflammation
- Infection (endophthalmitis)
- Retinal tearing
- Retinal detachment
- Cataract formation
- Glaucoma (increased pressure in the eye)
- Hypotony (reduced pressure in the eye)
- Corneal damage
- Vision loss/blindness
- Other sight-related complications
