TSGLI USMC benefits can help provide financial assistance to Marines and other military servicemembers who sustained a traumatic injury.
What is TSGLI USMC?
Traumatic Injury Protection Under SGLI (TSGLI) is a type of coverage provided by the Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance (SGLI). Like SGLI, coverage is provided to active duty members of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, or Coast Guard, commissioned members of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) or the U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS), Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) members, cadets, or midshipman, and other servicemembers.
In the event of a traumatic injury, TSGLI provides financial support to injured servicemembers. There is no need for servicemembers to opt into the coverage; they are automatically charged $1 per month as a part of their SGLI premium.
What Sort of Injuries Are Covered By TSGLI?
In order for an injury to be covered by TSGLI, all of the following must apply:
- Experienced while you are covered by SGLI;
- Resulted in a scheduled loss (see more information below);
- Experienced prior to midnight on the day that you separate from uniformed services;
- Resulted in schedule loss within two years of the injury occurring;
- Does not cause death within seven full days of the traumatic injury.
Benefits for covered injuries may be available retroactively. According to the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, retroactive benefits are available for traumatic injuries that occurred between Oct. 7, 2001 and Nov. 30, 2005. The VA has an eligibility questionnaire to help servicemembers determine if they qualify for retroactive benefits.
Under TSGLI coverage, “scheduled losses” are discussed frequently. This just refers to damages that occur as a result of a traumatic injury. Some examples of scheduled losses include: paralysis, loss of sight, loss of hearing, paralysis, severe burns, amputation, facial reconstruction, coma, and more. Other scheduled losses may be less intuitive, but they can include things like hospitalization or the inability to perform daily activities.
How Much Does TSGLI USMC Provide?
The amount of financial support provided by TSGLI depends on the scheduled loss incurred by the servicemember. For example, loss of sight will equal a $50,000 payment while complete paralysis of all four limbs (quadriplegia) results in a $100,000 payment.
According to the VA, multiple injuries that have resulted from a single traumatic event can be combined together into one TSGLI USMC payment. However, regardless of the number of losses incurred from a traumatic injury, TSGLI reportedly caps their payments at $100,000.
Do I Need Help Filing a TSGLI Claim?
Like any other insurance claim, a TSGLI UMSC claim requires documentation and forms in order to successfully apply for benefits. Although servicemembers are fully able to complete this process themselves, enlisting the help of a qualified attorney can help streamline the process and ensure that all of the steps are properly taken.
In the event that a claim is denied, an attorney can also help servicemembers with the appeals process. Appeals are associated with additional forms, even more documentation, and strict deadlines – all things that a qualified attorney can help with.
