A hairdressed claims asbestos in hair dryers caused him to develop mesothelioma cancer. While some occupations, including construction work and mining, have been known to increase workers’ risk of exposure to asbestos, people in other occupations may also suffer from health problems caused by exposure to this hazardous substance.

Hairdresser Claims Hair Dryer Caused Mesothelioma Cancer

At least one former hairdresser claims he was diagnosed with mesothelioma cancer following years of exposure to asbestos in hair dryers.  Calogero L., 80, worked as a hairdresser for several decades. Earlier this year, he was diagnosed with mesothelioma, a rare form of lung cancer often associated with asbestos exposure.

Prior to current regulations concerning the use of asbestos, the substance was used in the production of many common appliances and products. In the 1970s and 1980s, asbestos was used to line hair dryers because of the material’s heat and fire-resistant properties. According to Calogero, part of his job involved cleaning the dust and hair from hairdryers, as well as replacing wiring or other elements. This close contact with the interior of hair dryers may have resulted in frequent asbestos exposure. According to Calogero, he only recently learned that his career as a hairdresser may have exposed him to the dangerous mineral for years.

“Developing mesothelioma has been a huge shock and it has had a massive impact on my life,” he told the UK’s Plymouth Herald. “However, it is particularly distressing to think that the job I loved so much essentially caused it.”

About Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma cancer takes several years or decades to develop, often making it difficult to determine where and when someone was exposed to the carcinogen, according to the Mayo Clinic. This cancer develops in the thin layer of tissue, known as the mesothelium, that covers the internal organs.

Although there are some possible mesothelioma treatments, this disease is often terminal due to its aggressive nature. While asbestos may not be dangerous when it is whole and undisturbed, damaged, or crumbling asbestos may release tiny dust particles. When these small fibers are inhaled or swallowed, they may settle in the lungs or stomach and cause irritation and inflammation. Over time, this irritation may lead to cancer. Symptoms of mesothelioma may include chest pain, painful coughing, shortness of breath, and unexplained weight loss.

About Asbestos

Asbestos is a naturally-occurring fibrous mineral that has been used in many different products, due to its soft and flexible composition and its resistance to heat, electricity, and fire. It has been used in insulation, roofing materials, and other construction products.

People in certain occupations may be at an increased risk of developing mesothelioma cancer due to workplace exposure. These higher-risk occupations may include hairdressers, construction workers, miners, electricians, plumbers, insulators, mechanics, and home remodelers.

People who have developed mesothelioma after years of workplace asbestos exposure may be eligible to hire a qualified attorney and file a class action lawsuit. Victims who pursue lawsuits regarding asbestos exposure may be able to recover compensation for medical expenses, pain and suffering, injuries, and other damages.
