Zithromax Skin Reaction Lawsuit

Zithromax (azithromycin) is one of the most popular antibiotics in the United States, helping millions of patients each year.

However this medication has been linked to numerous complications, with patients recently complaining of Zithromax and kidney side effects.

Approved by the FDA in 1992, brand name Zithromax is manufactured by Pfizer Inc. and is popularly prescribed to adult and pediatric patients.

Most popularly, this drug is prescribed to treat middle respiratory and urinary tract infections, resulting in quick and efficient treatment for patients.

Instead of killing bacterial cells outright, Zithromax works by inhibiting the reproductive functions of the invasive cells.

The drug’s treatment mechanism allows for quick recovery and short prescription periods, making it exceedingly popular among children and parents.

However the massive popularity of the drug has lead experts to worry about overprescription and the many reports of severe side effects.

Zithromax and kidney side effects have been the subject of recent concern in the medical community, based on recent injury reports.

Overview of Zithromax and Kidney Side Effects

A recent study conducted on ehealthme saw a possible correlation between Zithromax and kidney side effects.

The study collected injury reports from the FDA and social media sources which featured patients who were prescribed azithromycin for different bacterial infections.

The results were consolidated on Sept. 23, 2016, with a total of 17,403 patients participating, and of those, 308 (1.77 percent) patients reported kidney failure.

Even though this recent study indicates a small possibility of occurrence, any chance of this correlation is highly concerning.

Combined with the drug’s popularity and the severity of kidney damage, Zithromax patients may be at risk.

Patients who exhibit signs of interstitial nephritis or kidney inflammation may be at higher risk for complete kidney failure unless treated.

Signs of this condition include changes in urination habits as well as nausea and fatigue. Other symptoms associated with Zithromax and kidney side effects include:

  • Abnormal kidney blood test with an elevated “BUN” level
  • Abnormal kidney blood test with an elevated “creatinine” level
  • Acute kidney failure
  • Decreased urination
  • Inability to urinate
  • Interstitial nephritis
  • Kidney disease
  • Jaundice (yellowing eyes or skin)
  • Clay colored stool
  • Nose or gum bleeding

It is important to note that the blood tests mentioned above that blood tests with elevated “BUN” and “creatinine” levels rarely occur.

Patients worried over Zithromax and kidney side effects should be vigilant against these symptoms and report any unusual side effects to their doctor.

Even though this correlation is potentially deadly for patients, Pfizer Inc. allegedly failed to warn patients against Zithromax and kidney side effects.
