A woman has filed a Xarelto dangerous side effects lawsuit against Xarelto’s manufacturers, Johnson & Johnson and Bayer AG, alleging she suffered anemia, hemoglobin decrease and epistaxis, due to taking Xarelto.
Plaintiff Elsbeth B. has filed the Xarelto dangerous side effects lawsuit in Louisiana federal court.
The lawsuit joins an increasing multidistrict litigation (MDL) accusing Johnson & Johnson and Bayer AG of misrepresenting the safety of Xarelto and inadequately warning about the drug’s bleeding risks.
According to the Xarelto dangerous side effects lawsuit, Elsbeth says that she was prescribed Xarelto from approximately September 2012 to May 2013 and from August 2013 to April 2014.
On Dec. 29, 2012, she says, she suffered hematuria. She later suffered anemia and a decrease in her hemoglobin levels on May 3, 2013. On Apr. 24, 2014, she suffered epistaxis.
Elsbeth claims she suffered these adverse side effects as a direct result of her use of Xarelto, the Xarelto dangerous side effects lawsuit states.
In addition to these adverse side effects, Elsbeth says that she suffered various injuries such as serious physical pain and added surgical, hospital and medical costs.
Xarelto Dangerous Side Effects
Xarelto, approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2011, is an anticoagulant medication prescribed to reduce risks of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism (PE), blood clots and strokes.
It was marketed as a superior medication to other anticoagulant medications. But plaintiffs say that due to important differences, it may be much more dangerous.
Like many anticoagulant medications, Xarelto comes with dangerous internal bleeding side effects. One specific difference is that unlike some other anticoagulant medications, Xarelto does not have an antidote to stop any possible internal bleeding side effects.
This is unlike warfarin, an alternative anticoagulant, that allows the cessation for internal bleeding through administration of vitamin K.
In addition, Xarelto does require ordered and consistent blood monitoring tests that can help stop internal bleeding side effects.
Patients who have been prescribed Xarelto and their families have complained about the following dangerous side effects from taking the medication:
- Abdominal hemorrhages
- Intracranial hemorrhages
- Retinal hemorrhages
- Wound infection and complication
- Epidural hematoma
- Adrenal bleeding
- Excessive blood loss
- Stroke
- Death
Xarelto Liability
Several Xarelto lawsuits filed against the manufactures claim that J&J and Bayer were negligent in several ways. Allegations against the companies state that they failed to accurately warn about Xarelto dangerous side effects on warning labels and that a lack of an antidote constitutes a design defect.
Lawsuits further allege that in comparison to other anticoagulant medications, such as warfarin, the drug does not deliver superior patient benefits. Further allegations purport that J&J and Bayer deliberately hid information of Xarelto’s dangerous side effects that include life-threatening and irreversible bleeding.
The Xarelto Dangerous Side Effects Lawsuit is Case No. 2:17-cv-17870, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana. The Xarelto MDL is In re: Xarelto (Rivaroxaban) Products Liability Litigation, MDL No. 2592, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana.
