Johnson & Johnson is facing a new baby powder wrongful death lawsuit, from grieving family members alleging the talc product had caused their family member to develop cancer.
This baby powder wrongful death lawsuit is filed by a set of grieving parents and son, who claim their loved one had developed ovarian cancer in direct result of using the company’s talcum powder product.
Baby Powder Wrongful Death Lawsuit
Louisiana plaintiffs Chad R., Mary P., and Ronald P. are filing this baby powder wrongful death lawsuit together, alleging the company failed to warn their loved one against talcum powder ovarian cancer.
Chad is filing on behalf of his mother while Ronald and Mary are filing on behalf of their daughter, Cindy P., who had used Johnson & Johnson baby powder and had developed ovarian cancer in alleged result.
After using Johnson & Johnson’s talcum powder products for a number of years, Cindy had been diagnosed with ovarian cancer in November 2006. By this point the disease was discovered at a latent stage, leaving very little treatment options and low chances of survival.
Cindy ultimately died from ovarian cancer on Jan. 24, 2008, leaving her family to seek compensation on her behalf.
Overview of Talcum Powder Ovarian Cancer Correlation
Talcum powder has been popularly used as a hygiene product for generations, having a variety of uses in reducing moisture and friction.
Some of its most popular applications include baby powder and feminine hygiene, in which women apply the powder to their genital area to reduce friction and smell. However, talcum particles can enter the vagina when applied to the genital area, which can later embed themselves inside the woman’s ovaries.
Eventually the talc particles fester and can evolve into cancer cells, making early diagnosis vital for maximum survival chances. The correlation between talcum powder and ovarian cancer has been suspected since 1971, with 22 consecutive studies further indicating the alleged link.
Cindy’s family had filed the baby powder wrongful death lawsuit, after discovering the company’s talcum powder products potentially induced ovarian cancer in female patients. The claimants further allege the company knew about the adverse health affects of their talcum powder products, and even encouraged women to use the powder for genital hygiene.
For years Johnson & Johnson has advertised its talcum powder products for these hygiene applications, claiming women will feel “cleaner.” According to the baby powder wrongful death lawsuit, Cindy never would have used the product if she had known the risk of ovarian cancer.
Cindy’s family members are seeking compensation for all damages, and alleging multiple counts of negligence and failure to warn.
The Baby Powder Wrongful Death Lawsuit is Case No. 2:17-cv-00166, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana.
