A Southern California woman claims that Biomet’s M2a Magnum hip implant is defective and that the company failed to properly disclose the risks and severity of side effects of the hip replacement system.
The plaintiff filed this metal-on-metal hip implant lawsuit against Biomet, alleging she suffered permanent hip replacement injuries as a result of Biomet’s allegedly defective manufacturing and questionable marketing of the M2a Magnum hip implant.
Plaintiff Lyman S. received the Biomet hip in October 2005. Lyman claims in the lawsuit that after the surgery she suffered severe inflammation, severe pain, injury to her nervous system, and had to undergo premature hip revision surgery in March 2014 to remove the metal hip implant.
Following the removal of the allegedly defective Biomet hip implant, her doctor informed her that the M2a Magnum Hip Replacement System had become unstable and essentially failed because of its metal-on-metal design and caused additional complications including metallosis (the release of metal ions into the bloodstream). Lyman, the lawsuit says, will require a subsequent hip revision surgery to fix ongoing hip implant complications.
The lawsuit further alleges that Biomet failed to adequately warn about the risk that the implant may loosen or fail within a few years after surgery. Lyman is seeking judgment for general and special damages, incurred and future medical expenses, attorney’s fees and court costs. She has demanded a trial by jury.
Biomet Hip Problems
The Biomet M2a Magnum Hip is a metal-on-metal hip replacement system that has been implanted in patients throughout the United States. Although it was promoted for active and younger patients, reported problems suggest that the artificial hip implant may be prone to fail within a few years of surgery.
While typical hip implants consist of components made of metal and plastic, the Biomet Magnum has three all-metal components: a metal femoral head, metal taper insert and metal acetabulum cup. As the metal parts rub against each other, microscopic shavings of metal may be released into the hip joint, which could cause inflammation, loosening, and other problems associated with metal hip poisoning.
Potential Biomet Magnum hip problems could include:
- Unexplained hip pain
- Swelling and soft tissue damage
- Unexplained tumors
- Difficulty standing or walking
- Loosening of the hip implant
- Additional hip revision surgery
A considerable number of people have reported problems with the Biomet hip replacement. The problems often involving loosening, dislocation, and wear or failure of the implant.
Although the hip implant is expected to last more than 15 years, many have required hip revision surgery within a few years to replace or correct problems with Biomet M2a Magnum hip implants.
