Los Angeles Parking Class Action Lawsuit Overview:

  • Who: A Venice woman says that city officials attempted to tow her RV while she was sleeping under an overnight parking ban.
  • Why: The woman says that Los Angeles parking restrictions that bar overnight parking are unconstitutional and violate her and others rights.
  • Where: She filed a class action lawsuit against the City of Los Angeles, the mayor, and various city officials this week.

A woman who lives in a recreational vehicle (RV) in Venice, California says that Los Angeles parking restrictions on RVs are unconstitutional in a class action lawsuit lodged against the city in federal court this week.

Lead plaintiff, C. Finley, wants to represent those without a traditional home who are prohibited from sleeping in their RVs under Los Angeles parking restrictions. She claims the city laws violate the US constitution by fining those for “merely being on, including sitting, sleeping, lying, or parking vehicles on public property for homeless individuals who cannot obtain permanent shelter.”

Plaintiff’s RV Towed Under Los Angeles Parking Restrictions

Finley says that she was living in her RV in Venice in April 2021. On the night of April 14, Finley says that she was woken up when officials attempted to tow her RV from Main Street. She says that a TV fell on top of her. In addition, her laptop was damaged, along with other property.

The plaintiff is seeking to put a stop to the Los Angeles parking restrictions that do not allow residents to live and sleep in their RVs. Specifically, she wants signs prohibiting overnight parking to be removed. The class action lawsuit also wants city officials to pay more than one million in penalties.

Residents Challenge California Community’s Parking Restrictions

Other California residents are challenging RV parking restrictions. Silicon Valley residents filed a class action lawsuit against the City of Mountain View in an attempt to stop officials from enforcing two ordinances that would effectively make mobile homes illegal.

The plaintiffs say that the skyrocketing cost of living in the area has forced them into RVs and they claim that, instead of addressing the problem of low-income housing, city officials are attempting to ban long-time residents who work and go to school in the area.

I have been homeless for 15 years now I’m on SSI because of misdiagnosis witch left me with Very Bad Headaches and pain gets so bad I go to the ER only to be told by the staff that I’m only here for drugs and I’m am basically call a junkie as I’m crying saying please help me. My body is unable to handle this kind of pain anymore and yet the police are trying to push me into a town with gangs, drugs, violence so if I don’t buy drugs from the gangs I will be attacked or set on fire thinking I’m a cop. My RV is legal and my insurance has home owners ins. My neighbors like me and see I’m not starting trouble and I’m clean and people are not going in and out of my RV. Thank You for reading this. JW

I have been harassed constantly for sleeping in my motorhome overnight, the parking signs are set up to make people lose sleep time from 10pm to 5am . The city and county of Los Angeles are punishing RV owners for not having homes and are too incompetent to find a place where we can park our mobile homes off street. All we need is a parking lot or even a dirt field to park on, we don’t need services, just somewhere to park and sleep. Is it because of real estate prices or NIMBY objections, any other city in the country outside of large Metropolitan areas make occomadations for RVs but not the richest cities in the area. I’ve lived in Los Angeles for over 40 years in homes and have never been harassed this much. Taking away trash cans and making us stay awake from 10pm to 5am to move our vehicles around just seems wrong. I feel like they are making us into criminals for wanting to sleep in our motorhomes instead of renting or buying properties to sleep in or on.

Please i live in eugene oregon and we have the same problems and people are lighting rvs on fire and all kinds of things because of these unconstitutional government bans. We are being forced as individual citizens to line up like sheep and when we dont follow suit they slowly rope us in with this crap
