Best Brands Consumer Products, Inc. Hand Sanitizer Recall Overview:

  • Who: Best Brands Consumer Products, Inc. is recalling lots of The Mandalorian Hand Sanitizer and Mickey Mouse Hand Sanitizer.
  • Why: Testing found the presence of cancer-causing benzene in The Mandalorian Hand Sanitizer product and methanol in the Mickey Mouse Hand Sanitizer product.
  • Where: The recall is nationwide.

A pair of hand sanitizers marketed to children are being recalled as one contains cancer-causing benzene and the other contains methanol.

Best Brands Consumer Products, Inc. announced Apr. 2 it was recalling lots of The Mandalorian Hand Sanitizer Ethyl Alcohol 68%, available in green and blue formulations, and Mickey Mouse Hand Sanitizer Ethyl Alcohol 68% in the blue formulation.

The company is recalling the products after U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) testing found the presence of benzene in The Mandalorian Hand Sanitizer product and methanol in the Mickey Mouse Hand Sanitizer.

Best Brands imported the two lots, which were produced by a third-party manufacturer.

Benzene is classified as a human carcinogen. Substantial exposure to benzene can occur through nose, mouth and skin and may result in cancers, including leukemia and blood cancer of the bone marrow and blood disorders, which can be life-threatening, the recall notice said.

Meanwhile, substantial exposure to methanol can result in nausea, vomiting, headache, blurred vision, coma, seizures, permanent blindness, permanent damage to the central nervous system or death.

“Although all persons using these products on their hands are at risk, young children who accidentally ingest these products and adolescents and adults who drink these products as an alcohol substitute are most at risk for methanol poisoning,” the recall says.

The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits. Best Brands said it had no reports of adverse reactions in relation to the products so far.

Best Brands Hand Sanitizers Notified of Contamination by FDA

Best Brands said it was notified of the testing and contamination by the FDA in late February.

It said it promptly investigated and determined that both of the affected lots were produced during the months of April and May, 2020, and that the affected lots had already been removed from sale for “unrelated commercial reasons.”

The products were distributed nationwide via three retail outlets, the recall says.

“Consumers should contact their physician or healthcare provider if they have experienced any problems that may be related to taking or using this drug product,” according to the recall notice.

The recall applies to The Mandalorian Hand Sanitizer Ethyl Alcohol 68%, Lot: 20E21 (Exp. 9/30/22), in 2.11 fl. oz. bottles, and Mickey Mouse Hand Sanitizer Ethyl Alcohol 68%, Lot: 20D21 (Exp. 6/30/22), in 2.11 fl. oz. bottles.

Consumers may contact Best Brands with questions regarding this recall or to request a refund by contacting Quality@BestBrandsintl.com

The news comes after another hand sanitizer distributed nationwide was recalled by the gallon after an FDA analysis found it contains methanol.

Tennessee Technical Coatings Corp. announced Mar. 7 on the FDA website that it is voluntarily recalling all lots of its Hand Sanitizer Isopropyl Alcohol Antiseptic 75% at the consumer level.
