Risk of Pet, Human Illness in Top Quality Dog Food Beef HVM Recall

While pets are at risk of eating the contaminated Beef HVM, humans who handle the contaminated products are also at risk, especially in the absence of thorough handwashing.

In humans, Salmonella infection symptoms include diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and fever. Pets may experience similar symptoms in addition to lethargy and vomiting. If your pet consumed the recalled Beef HVM but otherwise seems healthy, they can still infect other animals and humans. Top Quality Dog Food suggests contacting your veterinarian if your pet has ingested the food or has symptoms.

A Listeria infection is most serious, and sometimes fatal, in young children, vulnerable or elderly people, pregnant women, and others with compromised immune systems. Healthy people infected by Listeria may experience fever, headaches, stiffness, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Listeria infections are uncommon in pets, but symptoms may include diarrhea, anorexia, fever, abortion, depression, shock, and death.

Top Quality Dog Food has quarantined the remaining batch in its possession and discontinued its distribution. Along with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the company will continue to investigate the contamination’s source.
