Disney Slack message data breach overview:

  • Who: Hacking group NullBulge published on BreachForums what it claimed to be data from internal Slack channels belonging to Disney last week.
  • Why: The published data includes more than 1.1 terabytes of Slack messages and files allegedly taken from nearly 10,000 Disney slack channels.
  • Where: Disney’s corporate headquarters are in Burbank, California.

A hacking group published more than a terabyte of data from what it claims to be internal Slack channels belonging to Disney last week, in an apparent protest of Disney’s use of art generated by artificial intelligence.

The group, which goes by the name NullBulge, published data including Slack messages and files allegedly from almost 10,000 Disney channels, reports Wired

The leaked data reportedly includes 1.1 terabyte of unreleased Disney projects, images, code, login credentials and links to both APIs and internal websites.

NullBulge claims it received help from a Disney employee to steal the data, however it has not been confirmed at the time of this writing that the group actually received inside help, reports Wired.

Disney itself has not confirmed that it suffered a data breach at all, but reportedly told the Wall Street Journal that the company is “investigating the matter.”

Hackers posted allegedly stolen Disney data on BreachForums

The stolen data was posted last week on the hacking forum BreachForums, according to Wired, which reports the data was later taken off the forum but is still appearing on mirror sites.

NullBulge also posted personal data — including medical information — that it claims belongs to the alleged collaborator, in what it said is retaliation for the person allegedly cutting off contact with the group, reports Wired.

The hacking group reportedly has a mission statement of “protecting artists’ rights and ensuring fair compensation for their work,” according to its website, which lists AI-generated artwork as a “sin” that it argues “harms the creative industry” and “should be discouraged.”

Multiple class action lawsuits have recently been filed against companies over claims regarding data breaches, including Intuit, Evolve Bank, CDK Global, Advance Auto Parts, Truist and Panera Bread.

The class action lawsuits claim the companies failed to have adequate security procedures in place that could have prevented the data breaches.
