CertainTeed to Settle Lawsuit Over ‘Defective’ Organic Shingles
By Sarah Pierce
Do you own a home or other building on which CertainTeed Organic Asphalt Shingles are installed? If so, you may be eligible to claim anywhere from $34 to $74 per square in a proposed class action settlement.
Â
CertainTeed Corporation has agreed to settle with building owners who claim the company’s organic asphalt roofing shingles are defective, prematurely deteriorate, and otherwise fail to perform as promised. CertainTeed denies these allegations and asserts that the vast majority of its organic asphalt shingles are free of any defect and will last throughout the warranty period.
Â
The organic shingles at issue in this class action suit are certain asphalt shingles manufactured from July 1, 1987 through 2005 under the brand names Hallmark Shangle, Independence Shangle, Horizon Shangle, Custom Sealdon, Custom Sealdon 30, Sealdon 20, Sealdon 25, Hearthstead, Solid Slab, Master Slab, Custom Saf-T-Lok, Saf-T-Lok, and Custom Lok 25. Keep in mind that not all shingles marketed under these brand names are included in the lawsuit; only CertainTeed organic asphalt shingles are included. Also, all shingles sold by CertainTeed after 2005 are fiberglass shingles. If your shingles are fiberglass, they are not part of the lawsuit.
