Payments Go Out in EA Football Video Game Class Action Settlement

Consumers who participated in the $27 million class action settlement over Electronic Arts (EA) alleged monopoly of the football video game market are finally receiving payouts, according to numerous reports. An update to the settlement website confirms that Gilardi & Co. LLC, the Settlement Administrator in charge of distributing funds, began mailing checks to consumers in late October.
The checks are part of a class action settlement deal between EA and consumers who alleged the video game giant violated antitrust and consumer protection laws by holding exclusive license agreements with the NFL, NCAA and AFL to market branded football video games. The alleged deal drove out competitors and enabled EA to price-gouge consumers, including by charging 70 percent more for “Madden NFL,” according to the 2008 class action lawsuit.
The EA football game settlement was approved by a Court in May 2013, but way delayed by an appeal that was ultimately dismissed in August.
Consumers who purchased a new copy of Madden NFL, NCAA Football, or Arena Football video game for Xbox, Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, GameCube, PC, or Wii, with a release date of Jan. 1, 2005 to June 21, 2012, had until May 15, 2013, to file a claim to receive between $5.85 and $162.96 from the class action settlement, depending on which game(s) they purchased.
