Yaz Yasmin Blood Clots LawsuitA Kentucky plaintiff is suing Bayer Corp. for the injuries she allegedly sustained from taking their Yaz birth control pills. The plaintiff was prescribed Yaz in June 2007 and “suffered multiple deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in the left lower extremity with inferior vena cava filter placement on or about April 16, 2012.”

According to the Yaz lawsuit, “during the brief time that Yaz and Yasmin have been sold in the (United States), hundreds of reports of injury and death have been submitted to the FDA (U.S. Food & Drug Administration) in association with Bayer’s products.”

In April 2002, the British Medical Journal reported that the Dutch College of General Practitioners recommended that older generation birth control pills be prescribed in lieu of Yasmin as a result of 40 cases of venous thrombosis among women taking Yasmin.

The following year, a paper entitled “Thromboembolism Associated with the New Contraceptive Yasmin” was published in the British Medical Journal detailing a Netherlands Pharmacovigilance Centre report of five additional reports of thromboembolism in which Yasmin was suspected as the cause, including two deaths.

The Yaz lawsuit also mentioned that in less than a five-year period, from the first quarter of 2004 through the third quarter of 2008, more than 50 reports of death among users of Yaz/Yasmin/Beyaz/Gianvi have been filed with the FDA. These reports include deaths associated with cardiac arrhythmia, cardiac arrest, intracardiac thrombus, pulmonary embolism and stroke.

Despite the above-mentioned evidence, the plaintiff claims that neither she nor her physician received any notification from Bayer about these Yaz side effects. Further, she claims that the company failed to offer any remedy for the side effects associated with the oral contraceptives. The woman argues that, because Bayer directly manufactured and marketed Yaz without providing adequate warnings, the company should be held accountable for her injuries.

The Kentucky woman is seeking punitive damages, medical expenses and other economic damages, legal fees, expenses and cost of the action, and other relief that the Court may deem necessary.

This Yaz lawsuit is Case No. 3:13-cv-10814-DRH-PMF, in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois
