Transvaginal Mesh Lawsuits Are Piling Up

By Shawn Coates

Tranvaginal Mesh LawsuitInjuries, negligence and fraud are just a few of the alleged claims in the newest transvaginal mesh lawsuit regarding the Supris-Suprapubic Sling System manufactured by Mentor Worldwide LLC and Coloplast Corp. Plaintiff Michelle A. Elliston, a resident of New York, brought forth these allegations after she suffered injuries allegedly as a direct result of her implanted transvaginal mesh. She is one of thousands of women who are suing manufacturers for severe injuries they allegedly sustained from vaginal mesh implants.

Transvaginal Mesh

Transvaginal mesh is a synthetic tissue that is inserted within the women’s vagina to strengthen weaker tissue. This implant is normally intended to treat a pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and/or stress urinary incontinence (SUI).

According to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA), “POP occurs when a pelvic organ, such as your bladder, drops (‘prolapses’) from its normal position and pushes against the walls of your vagina. This can happen if the muscles that hold your pelvic organs in place become weak or stretched from childbirth or surgery. More than one pelvic organ can drop at the same time.

Organs that can be involved in a pelvic organ prolapse include the bladder, the uterus, the bowel and the rectum. Pelvic organ prolapse can cause pain or problems with bowel and bladder functions or interfere with sexual activity.” SUI is a type of incontinence caused by leakage of urine during moments of physical stress.

The Injustice

Since its approval by the FDA, there have been thousands of reports of transvaginal mesh implants going awry. According to the FDA, “These reports include problems such as pain, infection, mesh erosion (into vagina, bowel, and bladder), and recurrence of prolapse or incontinence. Some reports involved rare but serious intraoperative injuries such as bowel, bladder, or blood vessel perforation.

Most patients described in the adverse event reports needed medical or surgical intervention, and some required hospitalization.” To top it all off, there are more than 50 companies currently that manufacture and sell transvaginal mesh implants to thousands of women every year. There have already been thousands of injuries that have been documented, let alone the ones that go unreported.

The vaginal mesh implant lawsuit was filed into the Coloplast Mesh MDL known as In Re: Coloplast Corp. Pelvic Support System Products Liability Litigation, MDL No. 2387, Case No. 2:13-cv-23535, in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia.
