Transvaginal Mesh Lawsuits Are Piling Up
By Shawn Coates
Injuries, negligence and fraud are just a few of the alleged claims in the newest transvaginal mesh lawsuit regarding the Supris-Suprapubic Sling System manufactured by Mentor Worldwide LLC and Coloplast Corp. Plaintiff Michelle A. Elliston, a resident of New York, brought forth these allegations after she suffered injuries allegedly as a direct result of her implanted transvaginal mesh. She is one of thousands of women who are suing manufacturers for severe injuries they allegedly sustained from vaginal mesh implants.
Transvaginal Mesh
Transvaginal mesh is a synthetic tissue that is inserted within the women’s vagina to strengthen weaker tissue. This implant is normally intended to treat a pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and/or stress urinary incontinence (SUI).
The Injustice
Since its approval by the FDA, there have been thousands of reports of transvaginal mesh implants going awry. According to the FDA, “These reports include problems such as pain, infection, mesh erosion (into vagina, bowel, and bladder), and recurrence of prolapse or incontinence. Some reports involved rare but serious intraoperative injuries such as bowel, bladder, or blood vessel perforation.
The vaginal mesh implant lawsuit was filed into the Coloplast Mesh MDL known as In Re: Coloplast Corp. Pelvic Support System Products Liability Litigation, MDL No. 2387, Case No. 2:13-cv-23535, in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia.
