Illinois Woman Alleges Pulmonary Embolism Was Caused by Yaz

By Shawn Coates

Yaz Blood Clot LawsuitA new Yaz lawsuit allegedly claims that Yaz caused severe injuries to Plaintiff Robin Heinz, a resident of Spring Grove, Illinois. Robin ingested the oral contraceptive Yaz, designed by Bayer Corp. Ms. Heinz did not realize that there may be possible side effects resulting from this oral contraceptive when she was prescribed Yaz by her physician on January 26, 2005. In addition, she ingested a similar oral contraceptive, Ocella, on December 6, 2008, which is also designed and manufactured by Bayer.

It is alleged that as a direct result of the consumption of Yaz/Ocella, Robin suffered pulmonary embolism with infarction on May 18, 2012, in addition to other injuries. Robin is not alone in this matter. Recently, the number of lawsuits filed against Bayer for their products Yaz and Ocella has increased substantially as many others have suffered from significant side effects from the drugs. Had she known about the possible risks associated with these contraceptives, Robin claims she would have never ingested either drug in the first place.

Oral Contraceptives Yaz and Ocella

Oral contraceptives are no new thing, but Yaz and Ocella are different than most. They both contain a special chemical called drospirenone, a progestin that was never before used in oral contraceptives within the United States prior to their introduction. Since drospirenone is still a fairly new chemical, there is lacking evidence to show that its risk is low. In fact, many studies have shown that when ingesting Yaz/Ocella, one’s potassium within the blood drastically increases to unsafe levels.

This increased potassium level can lead to a condition known as hyperkalemia that can cause heart rhythm disturbances, which in turn affects the flow of blood to the heart, causing blood clots. Blood clots can cause heart attacks but they can also break off within the heart and travel to the lungs where they cause pulmonary embolism, which is what exactly happened to Robin.

Astonishingly enough at the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA), in a 5-year period there were over 50 reports of death among users as young as 17 that took Yaz/Ocella. One study cited in the Yaz lawsuit concluded that “oral contraceptives with … drospirenone were associated with a significantly higher risk of venous thrombosis” than most other oral contraceptives. If you were a victim of Yaz/Ocella oral contraceptives, you have legal options.

The Yaz lawsuit is Robin Heinz vs. Bayer Corporation, Case No. 3:13-cv-10811-DRH-PMF, in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois.
