Lawsuit Says Lipitor Caused Type-2 Diabetes Side Effects
By John Curran
Black claims in the Lipitor diabetes lawsuit that after taking the medication for roughly a year beginning in 2005, she was told she had developed type-2 diabetes. Black now has to follow a strict diet and regularly monitor her blood sugar levels as a result of this alleged Lipitor side effect. There are a number of known health conditions that have an increased likelihood of occurring following such a diagnosis, according to her complaint.
Black’s Lipitor diabetes side effects would have been less likely, the lawsuit notes, had Pfizer updated its product labeling to warn doctors and patients of the risks involved with use of the cholesterol drug. However, although product labeling now includes blood sugar warnings, her Lipitor lawsuit attorneys note that it may be difficult for the layperson to understand what “Increases in Hb Alc and fasting serum glucose levels have been reported with HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, including [Lipitor]” actually means.
Even if that was the case, patients have been using the medication since it was first approved in 1996, and that update did not come until 2012, although scientific literature had indicated problems relating to Lipitor type-2 diabetes side effects several years ago. In addition, the Lipitor lawsuit notes that even were the company to not have known of these problems, it would be reasonable to believe that further testing would have uncovered the increased likelihood of blood sugar problems, according to her Lipitor lawsuit attorneys.
It may be possible that men are also affected by these Lipitor side effects, but the majority of medical evidence has focused on women like Dorothy Black, and further research may be necessary to demonstrate additional issues.
The Lipitor Type-2 Diabetes Side Effects Lawsuit was filed July 3, 2012. The case is Black v. Pfizer Inc., Case No. 13-cv-04827, U.S. District Court, Northern District of Illinois. Key counts in the complaint include failure to warn, negligence, breach of implied warranty and fraud.
