Florida Man Files Propecia Lawsuit Over ED Problems
By Jessica Tyner
On June 7, 2013, Dahir sued Merck & Co. Inc., the makers of the popular anti-balding drug, claiming that the side effect warnings on the packaging were not comprehensive. Dahir says Merck knew about the sexual side effects of Propecia, or should have known, but didn’t place the appropriate warnings on the packaging. These “permanent and dangerous side effects” can include cognitive impairment, depression and myriad issues connected to sexual dysfunction.
There are numerous research studies looking at the connection between Propecia and sexual side effects including erectile dysfunction (ED). Some reports estimate that up to 39 percent of Propecia users will experience some complications related to sexual performance. In 2003, one study revealed that 50 percent of Propecia victims will continue having sexual complications for years or even for life.
According to Dahir’s Propecia lawsuit, Merck markets the drug as a safe and effective way to treat male pattern baldness. In his experience, it’s anything but safe. Dahir says that the current label downplays the risks of sexual dysfunction and states that a small percentage of men may experience complications, but even those will go away if a person stops use.
There have been over 1 million people legally taking Propecia since it became available, and an unfortunately high number have experienced Propecia side effects like erectile dysfunction and low libido.
The FDA reports that the Propecia label has been updated nine times in the U.S., but not even the latest 2011 update mentions persistent sexual side effects. The FDA also said in May 2012 that Merck is in the midst of updating the label again, but that hasn’t happened as of Dahir’s lawsuit filing.
The current warning on the Propecia website does mention sexual dysfunction, but also says that less than two percent of men are impacted, according to the Propecia lawsuit.
Dahir’s Story
Dahir began taking Propecia when he was 22 years old in 2003. Before Propecia, he was healthy and had no issues with sexual dysfunction. However, while taking the drug, numerous sexual side effects appeared as well as depression and cognitive issues. It’s been years since he stopped Propecia, but the side effects continue.
Dahir is suing Merck for liability, negligence, breach of implied and express warranties, fraud, violation of unfair and deceptive trade practices acts, and negligent infliction of emotional distress. He’s requesting compensatory and special damages, punitive damages and double and triple damages. His quality of life continues to suffer, and he sees no end in sight.
The Propecia Product Liability Lawsuit case is George Dahir v. Merck & Co. Inc., Case No. 13-cv-03482-JG-VVP, U.S. District Court, District of New Jersey, Trenton Vicinage.
