Bayer Pays Out $1 Billion in Yasmin Lawsuit Settlements
By Andrea Gressman
Bayer also revealed it has settled around 4,800 lawsuits filed by Yaz, Yasmin, Beyaz and Ocella users that have suffered blood clots and other injuries caused by the birth control pills. However, it has been estimated that there are still 10,000 additional lawsuits currently pending against the pharmaceutical giant in the United States alone, with another 1,200 cases yet to be filed. These birth control lawsuits have been filed by women who have experienced a variety of side effects from these drugs, including the following:
- Blood clots
- Deep vein thrombosis
- Gallbladder disease
- Pulmonary embolism
- Stroke
History of Yasmin (Drospirenone) Birth Control
Yasmin was the first birth control pill option to hit the market that contained drospirenone, which is a synthetic progestin that is responsible for the many terrible side effects the birth control has been linked to. Yaz was later introduced to the market, followed by the generic options Ocella and Beyaz. All of these pills contain drospirenone, which has been linked to dangerous and life-threatening side effects.
One of the most common charges against Bayer is that it did not properly warn users about the potential side effects of its drospirenone birth control pills. The side effect injuries have varied from patient to patient. Sadly, some of these injuries have cost the birth control users their life, which has resulted in family members filing wrongful death lawsuits against Bayer on the victim’s behalf.
Yasmin Litigation
Due to the high number of Yaz, Yasmin, Ocella, and Beyaz lawsuits there has been a multidistrict litigation established. This was created on October 1, 2009 to handle the high number of cases being filed. The Yasmin lawsuit MDL is currently being heard in the Southern District of Illinois and is now the largest MDL in the U.S.
The Yasmin settlements really went into full force when the judge overseeing the MDL issued a stay of any trials moving forward and ordered the plaintiffs and defendant into mediation in order to try to reach a resolution. It seems that Bayer has diligently tried to reach settlements with many different plaintiffs. However, up until recently the company has only addressed those with deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. However, Bayer has now looked at settling cases involving gallbladder disease as well.
If you have been injured by Yaz, Yasmin, Ocella, or Beyaz side, there is still time to file your own birth control lawsuit against Bayer. However, it is important that you do not delay.
