NuvaRing Lawsuits On the Rise as Trial Date Nears

By Andrea Gressman

NuvaRing blood clotAttorneys representing victims of NuvaRing injuries are reporting an increase in the number of NuvaRing lawsuits being filed as the first trial date draws near. NuvaRing is a popular birth control option known for its convenience to women as it only has to be implanted one time per month. However, the convenience of NuvaRing does not compensate for the severe side effects it has caused thousands of women to experience. As a result, hundreds of NuvaRing lawsuits have already been filed and continue to be filed by women seeking compensation for their injuries.

On May 10, 2012, the British Medical Journal issued a publication of a Danish study that linked vaginal rings, such as NuvaRing, to up to a 90% increase in blood clots over traditional oral birth control pills. Then, on June 14, 2012, the New England Journal of Medicine published a study that indicated NuvaRing is 2.5 to 3 times more likely to increase the risk of developing dangerous blood clots. So, it is evident that there is a substantial side effect risk for women who use NuvaRing, as many women have sadly figured out after it was already too late.

It was recently reported that in recent months the number of NuvaRing blood clot lawsuits that have been filed has increased by almost 5%. Previously it was reported by the United States Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation that there had been nearly 1,000 NuvaRing lawsuits pending.

Because there have been so many NuvaRing lawsuits filed the cases were consolidated into multidistrict litigation (MDL) in Missouri. The MDL is referred to as In re: NuvaRing Products Liability Litigation, No. 08-md-1964.

Part of the criteria for an MDL to be established is that all of the lawsuits must be filed against the same defendant, which the NuvaRing lawsuits are, and they all must allege similar claims. The NuvaRing lawsuits state the following as some of the most serious side effects that plaintiffs have allegedly suffered:

  • Blood clots
  • DVT
  • Pulmonary embolisms
  • Stroke

Other NuvaRing side effects include the following:

  • Vaginal infection or irritation
  • Vaginal secretion
  • Increased risk of blood-clotting problems
  • Heart attack
  • Stroke
  • Liver cancer
  • Gallbladder disease
  • High blood pressure
  • Fluid retention
  • Breakthrough bleeding or spotting
  • Weight gain
  • Headache
  • Depression
  • Nausea
  • Breast tenderness
  • Decreased sex drive
